This came from a fan of ... Wisconsin?confused

I mean of all teams to say that they're about to go on a spending spree

The poster should have been asked if it was a coincidence that the Big Ten being down for 2 decades coincided with the "rise" of Wisky football.

Things are about to get real in the Big Ten. And by real I mean, the powers are about to take over the conference yet again and distance themselves from the pack. OSU and Michigan will do it right away. It will take some time after the sanctions for PSU, but we will be there as well. Nebraska is going to start taping that new MD/NJ recruiting grounds. Wisky is going to go back to being mediocre-to-irrelavant. Money isn't going to save them.

  • The SEC will sign a deal that outdoes this so called "best tv contract." Besides that, big x football is slow and boring.

    SEC SEC SEC!!!

  • Even if the B1G gets a HUGE deal, what's to say that the SEC won't match and exceed that once they have their TV network in place? Go ahead and set the bar high at what the minimum the SEC can demand will be. Never poke a man with a bigger stick? Get real. Challenge the SEC at football and you'll see who ends up on top.

It has to do with population not passion.

It doesn't matter if people in NYC or DC ever watch a B1G game. They'll still be paying for the network.

The deals will probably be similar because of the addition of Texas / St. Louis markets for the SEC.

SEC needs to stop poking the sleeping beast

    Jdogg0821

First, I'm on record saying this is a good hire for Arkansas and I understand none of you will understand this statement in a vacuum of excitement (or lack there of) in this hire.

But the B1G ... yes the nations richest conference has been asleep for the better part of 2 decades. Complacent, fat and happy. Facilities... who needs them. Coaches / Assistants salaries... we'll find someone.

This hire has had a ripple effect in the B1G. A conference that is two years away from signing the richest TV deal in the history of college athletics... hearing 50+ million per school. The advantage that the SEC has had for a couple decades... passion, most importantly $$... I get the feeling is about to evaporate.

I wish you the best of luck. But people are starting to get pissed of in B1G country. As the old sayin goes... never hit the guy with the bigger stick. Should be interesting to watch over the next decade.

    lmao

Population and markets aren't everything since the brands of the B1G and SEC are national brands.

But yes the the SEC could get the same type money as the B1G gets, perhaps even more. The SEC network wouldn't just be available in the St. Louis market in Missouri, or the Gainesville market in Florida or the Tuscaloosa and Auburn markets in Alabama, etc.. It'd be available in all of Missouri, Florida, and Alabama and in all the states of the SEC schools since these are state schools. If you are going strictly by population then SEC still has the B1G beat:

    B1G School States:
    Illinois 12,869,257
    Pennsylvania 12,742,886
    Ohio 11,544,951
    Michigan 9,876,187
    New Jersey 8,821,155

    Maryland 5,828,289
    Wisconsin 5,711,767
    Minnesota 5,344,861
    Iowa 3,062,309
    Nebraska 1,842,641
    Total 84,161,225

    SEC School States:
    Texas 25,674,681
    Florida 19,057,542

I think you are in for a sad reality check. The SEC did a poor job with leveraging their power and it will be a decade before they can renegotiate for serious cash. Adding 2 more teams will mean another "look in" from ESPN, but they are not going to throw an extra $20 million per team per year. With 16 teams that would be a $320 million, per year increase which over 15 year would mean that the increase alone would be worth about 150% more than the current contracts with CBS and ESPN. Good luck getting that lol

    You forgot New York.

NYC has 8.4 million people alone. The entire state of New York has about 19.5 million.

That may be included in the BTN (NYC most certainly will be).

What conference school is in New York again?...

If you re-read my post, I was posting the population of the states from which teams reside. I was not getting into additional markets that could be captured. Rutgers is in New Jersey, not New York, so I didn't include New York.

You forgot to add the NYC and the DC areas to the Big Ten. And get ready, because we are likely to add Georgia and either VA or NC to the mix.

You should have because northern NJ shares the NYC TV market. So effectively, NYC is in the Big Ten's footprint. Same thing with MD and DC.

How is what I posted untruthful though? I posted the population of the states in which teams reside. Like I said, I wasn't getting into markets. It's widely known Rutgers was valued for the NYC market. I'm not saying they don't bring that with them.
