I need some help from some Longhorns fans

  • I'm going to Austin this weekend. It'll be my first time in Texas. I've heard people rave about the Tejas bbq. After a few years in the Carolinas, I'm ready to try some real deal steer.

What's the best bbq in Austin?

Also, since New Orleans has crap Mexican food, what's the best Tex Mex in Austin?

  • Not a longhorn, but a Texas Aggie here and a proud native of the Lone Star State:

BBQ could start a Debate, but within city limits i'd say go with Stiles Switch BBQ. If you're willing to make a short drive for better fare, head down to Lockhart, TX a.k.a. the BBQ capital of Texas, link below.

Now Tex-Mex and Mexican food aren't the same thing, so i'll take a stab at both.

For actual interior Mexican food, I'd recommend Fonda San Miguel, in particular the Cochinita Pibil (a Yucutan pork specialty with flavors different from border food)

For Tex Mex, i'd suggest a hole in wall called Azul Tequila

Feel free to respond/PM for any other food advice.

  • no reason to go to lockhart. best bbq in central texas is now w/i the austin city limits. jmueller bbq - best beef ribs ever, 2nd best brisket ever - best brisket is at franklin bbq in austin, but the lines there are stupid long. stiles switch is definitely good, and it would be the best place in town in 90% of america, but not when jmueller and franklin are in the same city.

1502 South First Austin, Tx 78704

get there before 11:00 to avoid lines and make sure you get fed. here's a piece that ran on the place this week:
    http://www.austin360.com/food-drink/dining/after-years-of-battling-personal-demons-john-mueller-2374398.html

i was there when anthony bourdain was filming no reservations a while back and travel channel was there again last week filming again.

    edit: what to order
must: 1 beef rib, 1/2 lb moist brisket, 1 link sausage
everything else is good, but those three are outstanding. you are wasting your time if you don't get those.

    Fonda San Miguel
    Azul Tequila

both of these are interior mexican. both are awesome, but neither are texmex.

there are a hundred good texmex places in town, and no matter what one person tells you is the best, 5 other people will tell you it sucks and their place is the best. personally, when i take out of towners for texmex, i'm a fan of curra's grill (http://www.currasgrill.com 614 East Oltorf Street Austin, TX 78704). i also regularly eat at maudies (http://www.maudies.com 2608 W. 7th Austin, TX 78703) and enchiladas y mas (no website 1911 West Anderson Lane Austin, TX 78757). other popular places are guero's, el arroyo, chuy's, taco xpress, taco deli, and matts el rancho.

  • Franklin is closed on Mondays, no? and thank you Huerta, i forgot jmueller!

Also, Azul tequila has tex-mex, just listed on the other side of the menu from the interior dishes. Will have to try Curra's, thanks.

No Sir, I was accepted to both universities, and made my choice. I lurk, read enough of your posted material, and have enough respect to leave you be. No reason for me to make an ass of myself.

Edit: I also think Legos are an amazing thing.

  • If you wanna do the Austin thing, go to Salt Lick in Driftwood (original) or up in Round Rock.
El Arroyo has good Mexican down on 5th or 7th I don't remember which, as well as Z Tejas on W 6th Street.

salt lick is for large groups and the experience, not the food. it can't touch any of the places listed in this thread. and i say that as someone who loves hitting it up every now and then.

i thought about including ztejas, but it's not texmex, it's more, texmex inspired. great grub though - had lunch there monday.

el arroyo isn't bad, but i'd never take an out of towner there as an example of great texmex. i practically lived there in college though.

  • I may have to go to Austin just to see what the fuss is all about with all these restaurants.
