I think the rivalry between OSU/UM the school

  • MrWoodson said...

This rivalry is based on one thing: Sparty fans are obsessed with Michigan. They are bitter they could not get into Michigan and they are bitter that no matter how good their teams are from time to time they live in our shadow. Not one of these MSU-UM rivalry threads have been started by a Michigan fan. In fact, the series has been so lopsided in Michigan's favor, if we didn't live in the same state no one would even consider it a rivalry at all.

When Michigan beats Sparty six, seven, eight times in a row, no one even notices. We don't make a big deal about it or ramp up the chatter because, well, it's not a big deal. It's expected. However, we totally understand why Sparty is suddenly talking trash about the past four years. I don't blame them. It's the first time they've won four in a row in 50 years and it will likely be at least that long before it ever happens again. They are quick to forget the fact that three of those wins were against some of worst Michigan teams in our 132 year history. The 2008 and 2009 teams, in particular, were atrocious. If Sparty wants to pound its chest and consider it a great feat to beat those teams, let them. Their excitement is absolutely understandable. When you're Sparty, you gotta celebrate whatever you can, whenever you can.

What Sparty and everyone else knows, however, is this is a blip on the long history between the two schools that is and always will be dominated by Michigan. Even Sparty's hoops program has begun its slide back to the mediocrity it exhibited prior to the Izzo era. Izzo is getting tired and is starting to lose the energy that helped him temporarily elevate that program for the past decade. In a couple of years, when Michigan again dominates both football and basketball in the state, no one will even remember these past four years and Sparty will be once again just another B10 team Michigan steps on annually as it climbs the ladder to the conference championship. And then, just like always, Sparty fans will slink back into the darkness that is irrelevancy. The trash talk will cease, their school colors will disappear from the backs of their unemployed alumni and their main goal each season will be to strive mightily to beat their designated B10 rival, Indiana, and win enough games to become bowl eligible.

    GO BLUE!!!

this entire post is a text book definition of why us Spartans hate everything to do with UM. it's because they're cocky, arrogant, censoredholes who can't handle defeat. they go on and on about how it was back when Saint Bo was alive and kicking it and how it will be when UM finally gets back on their feet. they can't fathom that the fact that the years of the big 2 little 8 are over and they are no longer a top relevant program these days. you want to bring up how atrocious your teams were in 08 and 09 yet for some reason unexplained to me, they beat their chests about how they beat us 6 years in a row during the Bobby and "Slappy" eras. the hypocrisy and double standards are off the charts with this lot.

The OSU-UM rivalry does not hold the same luster it once did. That's a fact.

The reasons for that don't have a lot to do with Ohio State though.

It's not about not being able to handle defeat. You Sparty's seek respect for beating us 4 years in a row, respect for a co big ten title(7th overall, first in over 20 years) respect for making a bowl game 4 years in a row but you give no respect to Michigan when we beat you 6 in row, have 42 total Big Ten titles(22 or 23 not sure which since Sparty joined the Big Ten), and made 33 straight bowl games. Seriously, you haven't done anything special enough to make us respect you when you don't respect what we have done. Your current 4 year run can't match what we have done and yet there was no respect for Michigan from State during those years when Michigan was doing well. Seriously, you think we are going to respect this 4 years when Sparty hasn't shown us any respect in the past.

I will make this perfectly clear. Plain and Simple for you. Sparty hasn't done jack shit to earn the respect you think you deserve. You don't give respect and you haven't done anything special as a football program!

  • After talking with my michigan friend about this for a while this weekend this is pretty much what I have concluded. The OSU and Michigan rivalry has a lot of hatred, but also a lot of respect. They respect that the other team is normally very good and that its a great rivalry. They also hate each other just as much because of it, but the feeling is mutual.

The difference with the Michigan/MSU rivalry is that michigan doesn't respect MSU. The hate is there, both teams definitely hate each other, but without mutual respect the rivalry will never truly become anything other than just an in state rivalry. Now I think if MSU stays good and continues to beat Michigan then that could change in the future, but if it falls back to the norm I don't see much about the perception changing.

Where's the respect from State? I don't see it. All Sparty does is downplay anything Michigan related. Its all hype according to State fans. Charles Woodson really didn't deserve the Heisman. It was all Hype according to Sparty.

Don't put the respect thing all on Michigan. Sparty has never ever respected the accomplishments of Michigan's program.

Does not hold the same luster to who? You? The 06 game is the highest rated rated regular season game since Notre Dame FSU in 93. As a fan of neither team how can you state it as fact? And even if it had lost some luster we did our part in the 90's to start the ball rolling.. it wouldnt be all on Michigan. I would however say we had the lions share of the problem.... two words.

Its a defense mechanism... they respect you, they just cant let you know it. This being included in the same sentence with the big boys is all new to them.

Yeah those games recently really meant a lot lol

    2010: 37-7 OSU, UM became 7-5
    2009: 21-10 OSU, UM became 5-7
    2008: 42-7 OSU, UM became 3-9
    2007: 14-3 OSU, UM became 8-4

Those games were HUGE!!! Nation wide audience tuning in!

So 2006 was the last time the game meant something. Then you ran Lloyd off.
