I think the rivalry between OSU/UM the school

  • NigelUno said...

    lol

The ND-UM game got higher ratings one of the years.

In 2009, OSU-USC got higher ratings than OSU-UM. In 2008, OSU-USC and OSU-Penn State got higher ratings than OSU-UM.

All that just means tOSU is one of the best draws in the Nation!! Citing and nitpicking games does not mean our game has lost luster. It just means people love to watch tOSU play nearly every week. Of course there are gonna be higher rated games here and there... so what? What are you so bothered by? I mean you guys get gameday all to yourselves this week... 1st time in 2 years... enjoy it.

    cheers

I already put this in another thread, but here ya go.

Duffy Daugherty: 19 seasons 2 Big Ten championships 109-69-5 (.609) 2ish NCs 3 years probation 10-7-2 against Michigan 6 losing seasons

Bo Schembechler: 21 seasons 13 Big Ten championships 194-48-5 (.796) 16 times in the postseason top 10 0 years probation 17-4 against MSU 0 losing seasons

Lloyd Carr: 13 seasons 5 Big Ten championships 122-40 (.766) 1ish NC 0 years probation 10-3 against MSU 0 losing seasons

    AND, as a bonus,

1965: MSU lost in the Rose Bowl, finished 10-1, ranked #2 in the AP, named NC by the UPI. Alabama was named National Champion

1966: MSU tied ND in a #2 vs #1 meeting so both teams were 9-0-1. Due to a stronger SOS, ND was given the AP national championship AND the coaches NC. Undefeated Alabama was #2 in most polls, and one or two obscure ones had MSU as #1.

1997: Michigan and Nebraska finish the season undefeated, both with huge wins over teams that were ranked #3 (PSU for Michigan, Tennessee for Nebraska). Michigan wins the AP NC, Nebraska is named NC by the coaches.

    What about Biggie?

Edit, also curious becuase I really don't know the answer, how many NC for UM all time?

    What about Biggie?

    Biggie Munn
    7 seasons
1 Big Ten championship (only one Big Ten season)
    54-9-2 (.846)
1 NC (split with Georgia Tech)
    0 losing seasons
    4-3 against Michigan

The question that I was answering is that no coach in the state of Michigan has been as good as Duffy since then. So that's what I was arguing. Biggie was better, but then I could throw in Yost and Crisler and demolish any argument

    Fielding H. Yost
    25 seasons
10 Big Ten championships (14 seasons in the Big Ten)
    165-29-10 (.833)
    6 National Championships
    1 losing season
    17-2-1 against MSU

    Fritz Crisler
    10 seasons
    2 Big Ten Championships
    71-16-3 (.806)
    1 National Championship
    0 losing seasons
    8-0 against MSU

I am not shying away I feel like I am running in mud talking about this with you... I have never stated we are the greatest thing since tv ratings... which are the words you keep putting in my mouth. I said the 06 game had the highest tv ratings since ND-FSU in 93 for a regular season game. I then asked in a 4 year span did you really think the game had fallen that much to warrant irrelevancy or lack luster?

I never said we were still on the top of the heap... yet you attempted as most people do to nitpick and select games here and there to make your argument. That is what people lost in a discussion do. You are so desperate to make the game null and void you dont even remember why you are looking up info and stats now. My point and agenda was clear from jump and has not waivered.... you need the jaws of life and a rope to find your way back to the light.

Let me know when you get back on topic if you wanna continue... you da man Nigel!! afro

    BBBG8:

Maybe by now you are beginning to understand how annoying Sparty can be. They beat us in 2008 and have been talking trash ever since. They beat Wisky last year and started to talk trash about them. Even this year, before their game, they are talking about how Wisky is overrated. One of their players even put out a quote about how they are going to hurt Russell Wilson. Now, because they beat you this year, they are going to start trash talking to you. As a Michigan fan, despite my hatred of all things Scarlet & Gray, please accept my sincere apologies for losing to Sparty the past four years. It is primarily our fault they won't shut up. Be very thankful you don't have a little brother of your own in your state.

I was the one that started the ratings thing, and I even admit it is the best rivalry in college fb. I was just pointing out to Devidee that the ratings have suffered and that they were thinking about moving it. He called BS on it and I provided the link.

There was a lot of press at the time of how the rivalry didn't mean that much anymore, and it was pretty much because OSU was dominating Michigan and the quality of the contests was abysmal.

You are correct about the #1 and #2 game, that was huge. They even gave it a later start to tap into the west coast market.

xxmgoblue is correct in pointing out that the B1G would make the move in the hopes of getting two UM OSU games. No question about it, but there is a downside to it as well which he is glossing over. The move was discussed mostly because the series has been so non competitive as of late and heavily dominated by OSU. The idea was to move it to Oct. get roughly the same audience its getting in Nov. and then split the two up in new marquee match ups that would be able to compete for ratings. Then if both win out score you get a second UM OSU game and huge ratings.

If anyone from your fan base doesn't think a TV exec cares more about ratings and ad revenue than the history of your rivalry, well I don't know what to say. Illinois and Ohio game this weekend got the 3:30 spot purely for economic reasons, bigger markets were going to watch that game (Chicago) than MSU and UM. Its a fact of life.

Bottom line until both schools (OSU and UM) get better the ratings are going to suffer.

In 2006 it was more insane than any rivalry on the face of the planet. BBucks brought up a good point. It may have lost luster to you and to the media, but it hasn't to us and I'm sure it hasn't to them. So you can't tell us that it lost luster to us. To fans of the teams, it means just as much as it ever did.

Serious question. How many NC's do you claim? According to that site, you have 1.5. And I know the 1952 one that they give you was split with Georgia Tech.

I wasn't aware of the timeframe you were discussing.

You gotta count our BS national champions if you count yours too. Add 2 for Duffy, '55 and '57.

Biggie has 2 as well, I wouldn't call 1952 shared at all. Both major selectors had MSU #1. I know it's pretty weak using wikipedia as a source but they list "consensus national champions" since 1950 which I find interesting.

Why would you not call 1952 shared? MSU won the AP and coaches, but 12-0 Georgia Tech won most of the other polls.

Kinda like how MSU didn't win the AP or coaches in 1966 but was named NC by other polls. ND (and Alabama in some polls) were ranked ahead.

In 1965, MSU topped the AP but didn't top the others.

1955, Michigan State was #2 in every poll. I can't find one that named them NC. They were 9-1, Oklahoma was 11-0. Oklahoma was consensus NCs.

1957 was split between Auburn and OSU. OSU won the coaches and Auburn topped the AP. MSU was a consensus #3.

1951 had Tennessee as the AP and coaches NC. Maryland topped other various polls. MSU topped one obscure poll.

I really don't see how you can give them NCs in those years..

Steve.. it's all good. My whole point to my new buddy Nigel was all about luster... of course it isnt the #1 game every year ratings wise but it is just as big as the others...IMO it is the biggest rivalry going.. would I expect all the other tremendous rivalries ro admit that..? Of course not. I have been to every single major rivalry game there is except Army-Navy. I have enjoyed them all and seen the passion in all the fans and gameday scenarios. It was a tremendous experience. I still think we have the deepest disdain when it comes to losing to each other... nothing worse than the 90's. Now the script is on our side.... and it looks like it is gonna even out here soon. This game will ascend to the undisputed top again in the next couple of years.... Hoke v. Meyer .. book it!

MSU fans want UM to lose every game.
OSU fans want UM to win every game but one.
