I wonder why one is Heisman Finalist and the other wasn't

  • I like Johnny but the fact is this is the most meh heisman race I've ever seen.
    I don't even care.

To the OP, Ro wasn't one of the 10 best players in 'Merica much less a Heisn candidate

If statatistical defenses faced were applicable, this year Klein wouldn't even be a candidate.

It's a popularity contest. Only a few separate themselves and deserve the trophy in the spirit in which it was intended.

Another article depicting the regional differences.

Real empirical, comparing number of NFL players produced versus total state population makes no sense, you have to do it against number of high school football players.

    Alonzo Harris

  • The better comparison is cj mosely this year. He compares very nicely to MT from a stats perspective and he plays on atop 2 defense .

    CJ Mosely
    99 tackles
    61 solo
    38 assisted
    1 fum return
    7 TFL
    4 sacks
    1 fum forced
    3 PBU

MT has the edge in int. That's it really.

Agreed to the first part, but I don't see why a dude who has the same stats on a similar team is suddenly a Heisman candidate just because it's a different year. Actually, I do see and it's because he's a damn Domer.

There's no use in trying man. You could explain all day long how it's easier to run on defenses built to stop pass-first offenses and not make a dent in these guys, I remember how these debates went in '09. Mark Ingram stared down 8 man fronts that knew with 100% certainty he was going to run between the tackles and still averaged 6.2 YPC.

Ingram comes to mind when you talk about merit and not the media's dog and pony show pick.

    That's just it BLF.
The Heisman race this year doesn't have the star power to make me even care.

Lots of 2nd and 3rd place finishers in resent year would walk away with the trophy this year.

BTW I hate the domers too.
Will be pulling for them in Jan though cheers

Te’o's 7 interceptions are the highest number of interceptions by a linebacker of the last twelve years. To give you an idea of how remarkable an achievement that is, there isn’t one other linebacker in the top 20 in interceptions and the next closest linebacker has just 4 interceptions. Te’o is tied for the lead in takeaways nationally (interceptions and fumbles recovered) with 9 (the other two leaders are defensive backs). Additionally, there isn’t a linebacker on record who has 7 interceptions and 100 tackles in a year (at least that we can find.) While some may look at Te’o's lack of sacks and/or tackles for loss, it’s important to note that he was asked to play a completely different role this year. When asked to play that role last year he had 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. Those are outside linebacker numbers from the middle linebacker position. Ironically, pass coverage was supposed to be his one weakness coming into this year. Te’o played against many early Heisman candidates… who weren’t candidates after they played Notre Dame including Bell, Robinson, Taylor, Lee and Jones. If the criteria is “outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity“, it’s hard to argue any player has been more “outstanding while exhibiting the pursuit of excellence with integrity”, than Manti Te’o.

PAC 10....."Better" defenses than in the SEC?

See Reggie Bush 2005 yards per carry as well as the career yards per carry of LaMichael James at Oregon. Now see their NFL yards per carry....at least for Bush.

Every NFL Defense last year must have been comprised of nothing but former Pac 12 players then, since Bush was the only RB in the NFL who had more than 175 carries to still avg. 5.0 yards per carry.

Alabama 13-0 SEC Champs #1 Scoring Defense

MLB Roland McClain 100 Total Tackles (49 Solo, 51 Assisted) 12.5 TFL 4 Sacks 4 PBU 14 QB Hurries 1 FF 2 INT

Notre Dame 12-0 #1 Scoring Defense

    MLB Manti Te'o 103 Tackles (52 solo, 51 assisted) 5.5 TFL 1.5 Sacks 4 PBU 4 QB Hurries 0 FF 7 INT

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hmmm... I wonder why.......

    Alabama is 12-1 not 13-0

    What about Ryan Shazier? OLB

    114 tackles (69 solo, 41 assisted) 17 TFL, 5 Sacks, 10 PBU, 3 QB Hurries, 3 FF, 1INT, 1 Touchdown. That's with 2 missed games
