LOL at the responses. I've heard it's rough, but figured it's like anywhere else...just gotta go to the right places. Thanks for the advice. Fortunately, our friends will probably know how to keep us alive, but it's always good to get a wider array of opinions. We have a friend here in Tuscaloosa thats a surgeon, and he grew up in Baltimore. He said there are some cool places downtown, so I figured he probably wouldn't have said that if there weren't cool places. Our friends live between DC and Baltimore, and hit both cities when they can, but they also have a 9 month old son, so they don't get out like they used to. I've been to Detroit, Chicago, and LA...is it really any worse than that? (OK, so LA really wasn't bad at all. I did skip Compton, though.)

I don't know if any city is worse then Detroit. Lol. Actually even Detroit's on the up and up. I personally love Chicago. Just avoid south Chicago and you're good to go. North Chicago is pretty wealthy and la-di-da. East Chicago is the lake. South Chicago's the hood and I think West Chicago is the best representation of the city. Some shady areas, but I think you see what Chicago is all about on the Westside.
LA is such an overrated city. I hate LA so much, but that'a just my personal opinion. I've never hung out in Compton, but I've been to USC which is in South Central. Good thing they have a wall around the campus. What a smart move to put a college campus in the worst part of LA. Brilliant. Figures why SC has one of the highest crime rates for a university.
Anyway, Baltimore is an awesome city. Alot of blue collar hard working folk and it definitely has its own unique charm. Most of these posters have watched the Wire, Homicide and the Corner so that's what they're going by. Most of them probably haven't even been here.

Amazed at some of these answers. How shocking, I bet most have never even been.
Baltimore's a great place with a lot of charm, but you have to know what you are doing. The worst areas of the city are so secluded you will never seen them (far away from downtown).
As keep on ducking said Innder Harbor, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Canton are all filled with young people and great bar/nightlife hotspots. Locust Point used to be a working class area but it's now filled with young people and other great bars. East Harbor is very new and has some very exclusive places.
As for some true Baltimore/Maryland culture, Hampden and Little Italy are great places. Mount Vernon and Chalres Street has a great artsy culture too, love some of their restaurants/museums/theatre. And for nightlife, Rams Head Live and Power Plant Live are very exciting.
Have a good time, it's hard not to. Cuisine, bars, nightlife, exciting young people, it's got it all.

i live in baltimore city, what kind of activities are you looking for? and what days of the week will you be going out? plenty of great bars in fells point, federal hill, and canton. Daytime the harbor has the science center and the aquarium as well as a ripleys. You'll enjoy yourself a lot more than you'd probably think. Stick to those areas and powerplant and you'll be 100% safe

Thanks hot sauce! Good stuff there. I'm taking some notes. For those saying "don't go"...we're going anyway to visit friends. I'm not really all that afraid of cities with reputations, but I'm not running thru the hood with a swastika pasted to my forehead either.

My bad. You're right. South Central is a really nice and safe part of LA. I stand corrected. I guess they can tell the armed security guards who partol the campus to quit. And then they can remove the wall that protects the campus from the surrounding neighborhood. Lol. You're the first person I've seen to try and say that SC is in a good area.
And you're right. Nobody should want to enjoy the most beautiful part of the country(Pacific Northwest). Damn hippies with their mountains and trees and lakes and dunes. Who likes stuff like that? I'd much rather live in Lala land where all the spoiled, rich, self entitled kids of Orange County are protected from the Crips, Bloods and Sorenos by a wall and armed security guards.
