"What Auburn didn't do was convince the nation that it was the clear-cut national champion. The Tigers weren't eligible for the UPI poll because of their NCAA probation so Beckwith worked to make sure Auburn ended up on top of the AP poll.

At the time, any AP subscriber was eligible to vote in the poll. Beckwith made sure that smaller radio stations and smaller papers were aware of this, adding in his informational pitch that a vote for Auburn would be greatly appreciated. It was a loophole that the AP quickly closed -- it formed a panel of voters soon afterwards -- but it couldn't change the vote that season, much to the chagrin of Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes, who boldly questioned if Auburn had played anyone of note.

The Tigers garnered 210 first-place votes and 3,123 total points to run away from the Buckeyes (71 first-place votes, 2,646 points). The previous week, Auburn had 85 first-place votes and Ohio State, which was crowned the UPI national champion, had 65 first-place votes."

If you go undefeated, it wouldnt be as bad as bammer, especially if you claim it this year. They claim one title when they finished in 3rd place in the SEC and 5 or 6 other titles 50 or 60 years after the fact

Why would we be butthurt? All of our goals are still in reach this year. Win B1G, rose bowl and of course beat the shit out of Columbus. When your cracker jack of a defense can actually stop a few teams get back to me. Enjoy your best season with Urbs at the helm and no postseason to go with it. That is all.
