If I were Texas

  • Surprised Big Game Bob got embarrassed in a big game. Oklahoma would have lost to Texas State last night its all but guaranteed. Texas and Oklahoma need coaches. Plenty of talent at both schools. Jmo

  • In regards to the tidal shift in the state of TX, keep in mind that this season could not be further from an anomaly. A&M went into a NEW conference, NEW head coach, NEW off. coord., NEW def. coord, and NEW AD. They had no business winning anything... Just ask any media outlet.

The biggest thing never gets mentioned is Kevin Sumlin. He is a young black coach that identifies with young black players. (Did you ever think that Tupac would be played over the speakers at an A&M practice?) He is very smart offensively and does a nice job on defense as well. He's taught his guys to believe in him and his system. The swagger of Kevin Sumlin landing a helicopter next to high school football games versus Mack Brown handing Werther's Original butterscotch out to kids is why the momentum will be sustained. Remove Mack, its a different ballgame. Keep the status quo and the snowball only gets larger. Long live Mack!!!

Tough times in Austin for the next couple of years. Should fire Mack and hire nick next week, pay him whatever it takes.

You could say that about any Blue Blood in the country.

Hand him a blank cheque and your team will be amongst the nations best in no time.

Respect what Nick has done, but if we're just throwing out wish lists I'd rather have Harbaugh. He would be Urbie's worst nightmare. "What's your deal?"

  • Texas will continue to be mediocre as long as MB is coach. I love seeing them suffer thru shitty seasons.

I'd much rather see Saban in Ann Arbor than Harbaugh.

  • A&M has already overtaken Texas. And you don't know your history if you think Texas has always dominated this state.

Up until Mack Brown, A&M mopped their floors with Texas' face for about 15 years.

That's obviously going to be the case for the foreseeable future.

  • It is cute hearing the, "But WE'RE Texas!" line over and over and over though.

Yes, you're Texas. aka SEC whipping boy.

    Enjoy it, horns.

  • Tell me more about Mack Brown turning things around with top recruits. Kevin Sumlin just went 11-2 with a former walkon starting at DT in the SEC, and all of a sudden he's landing 4 stars at the position. We'll see y'all at the press conference after your perpetually young team goes 8-4 next year and Mack "Retires."

No doubt. I'd take Harbaugh over any coach in football.

Anyone can win at Stanford is the funniest thing I've read in months...

But yeah, I think Shaw is way, way overrated.

    This.

Prior to Mack... A&M was handing Texas ass whippings regularly

  • would you say 3 years makes a trend? because Texas has been mediocre at best these past few years, and A&M has done everything possible to make everyone forget about their own mediocrity in the decade before this. Sumlin has been recruiting like Mack used to, picked up the top recruit in the state in a head to head with Texas and lsu. In the meantime, Texas has a small class, and had done decommits and hasn't.been as stringent on their no visits policy. Granted, they were going to take a small class this year, but looking at juco and in December doesn't show much.confidence in swoopes or anyone they have on campus.

bottom line is, we've cycled around; Mack is RC, Sumlin is the new Mack. and texas has given him at least one more year to make impressive come back wins against teams like kansas and tech.

I don't think looking at a JUCO is indicative of a recruit out of high school. It is more indicative of the current depth at the position now.

Personally, I think you need to wait a few years before saying anything has cycled. Texas did beat aTm last season and teams at major programs usually do get a bump in recruiting during a coach's first couple of years. If it continues, then yes, maybe it is back to the 90's in Texas.

  • The quarterback remark is because of how many they've burned through. Gilbert transferred out to SMU, Connor Wood transferred to Colorado, Ash was getting juggled with McCoy (who's currently in criminal trouble), and I remember hearing rumors about Connor Brewer transferring out. Plus on top of all that, Swoopes has not been looking as impressive as he was billed. I definitely think there's nothing wrong with going to a juco player, it certainly worked out well with Auburn and Cam Newton. But in the case of Texas, they are looking nervously thin, especially to start looking at a juco player to make an instant impact at QB.

I guess it may be a little early to say anything has cycled, but Texas has definitely been in a bit of a slump with the rise of OSU, KSU, and Baylor, not to mention the success we've had this year.

I definitely think that if Texas doesn't right their path soon, they're in for a long decade. Conversely, with the draw of Mizzou and Vandy out of the east, I think A&M has a good shot to make a run for the SEC title, or at least a BCS bowl. Sumlin's flying helicopters to recruits games, flying between Memphis and Arizona in the same day to see a recruit and his parents, while Mack has been bitching about the LHN and other teams doing the horns down. It's a limp dick attitude coming out of Austin, and I honestly think Florida took the fire away from that program.

Kind of just a joke with Brem22, although Willingham won a PAC title and Harbaugh never did.

Out of the 10 coaches Stanford has had since Bill Walsh's first stint there, only 2 have taken Stanford to bowl games in more than half of their seasons. Willingham and Shaw.

Of course I believe Harbaugh is a better coach, but Willingham took over a crappy Stanford program as well. They were 7-14 under Walsh his last 2 seasons there. Their PAC record in those seasons were 4-12 compared to 5-12 the 2 seasons before Harbaugh.
