If People are generally fat nowadays because they eat too much

Then why are women convicts in prison also overweight? You would think they would limit their caloric intake.
And don't come at me with their sedentary lifestyle. Between all the scissoring and working out in the yard they get plenty of excercise.

Laziness is the reason. Its real simple, you have to burn more, or the same amount of calories that you consume, to not get fatter. There are no secret miracle diets.
