If TCU is smart, they'll do whatever it takes to keep Patterson

  • I mean really, who are they going to get that is a better coach than Patterson?

  • No, he's one of the best coaches in the country.

They can try. Depends on what he wants. They don't have the money though if he is interested in a program like Arkansas though.

You say this like you have someone to convince.

  • There has always been speculation that Patterson was holding out for the Texas job. Be interesting to see what he does.

IF we knew that Texas was getting rid of Mack soon then yes, he would get the job. If Mack holds on for another few years and TCU has a bunch of mediocre seasons, is he still a prime candidate?

i don't think it's any secret that mack is gone w/i the next two years. the fire has died down because we beat tech and we'll likely handle tcu, but the annual ou asswhipping is the reason we're 15 and not 10 and looking at a bcs game right now.

the question is: can patterson turn down programs like arky, tenn, etc before that happens?

i think the only way it happens this year is if we beat tcu, play kstate close, win our bowl game and mack can step down on a positive note. praypraypraypraypray

I think you are right. IF he knows something is going to happen, then he's at Texas, but even a contract, which wouldn't happen since he is at TCU wouldn't help after what happen with Muschamp.

Of course, he could leave for Arkansas, get paid, and still take over for Mack in 2015 or so. No matter what happens at Arkansas, why would you turn down Texas to stay there? I caould understand him turning down both for TCU if he just loves it there and doesn't want to leave, but I wouldn't think being at Arkansas would change his stance at Texas in a few years.

Personally, I just think Mack is being stubborn at this point.

the problem is the timing. texas is going to open up in 2012 or 2013, not 2015. i pray to god that the big donors understand this timing issue as well.

I just think Mack is going to talk them into letting him finish out the Ash era and see if he can get anything done there. After that, if he hasn't done anything, it should be time. Even if he does do anything, it should be time to go out on a good note.

I hear a lot of anger from friends in Texas, but they all seem to think that the $$$ guys are going to be a year behind what the masses want, which seems to be now or at least give him one more year to get it done.

I know everyone loves Gary Patterson, but what about Briles if Texas wants a guy from that area. Briles seems to be recruiting better and have more in roads in Texas than Patterson, IMO.

Of course, having just said that, I realize Texas needs a coach not a recruiter. Texas is going to get theirs and really your only competition is probably now aTm for maybe 2 or 3 of the top 10 guys that are staying in state. You guys even seem to dominate OU more and more every year in Texas than I previously remember.

    BetterOff

  • i'm a briles fan, but that will never happen. we already have no defense and he's not going to help that side of the ball. plus, he hates texas and that's no secret to everyone in the state. he'd never even get approached about it to have the chance to turn us down.

i won't pretend to know what the big money guys think, but there has been talk that some of them are making moves to avoid another october asswhipping. i doubt that enough of them mobilize to make a change, but a man can dream. hell, a solid loss to kstate and a loss to aggy could be just what they need to pull the trigger. f*ck, i would be so conflicted if that is our dilemna.

Texas should seriously pursue Paul Rhoads from Iowa State, imo. The guy can flat out coach. And like you said, they will always get theirs in recruiting.

I do like Paul Rhodes, but I think he needs some more positive experience before a job like Texas comes his way. 2 games under .500 isn't what Texas is going to go after, even if it is at Iowa St after having to clean up Chizik's mess.

haha - yeah, i bet you'd like that! unfortunately, texas fans have been in constant conflict for rooting purposes since the ou game.

win all the rest to have another 11 win season, or lose the rest to get rid of mack?
do we want aggy to win and kick the $ec!$ec!$ec! out of the mnc game, or bama to win so we don't have to hear all the chirping?
beat kstate and go to a bcs bowl, but mack is cemented in the hc spot?
lose to kstate and go to cotton vs aggy - beat aggy, save mack's job or lose to aggy and hope mack gets canned?

Deep down, I don't think a lot of Texas fans really want to play aTm this season. The way it sits now, you finished off the series with a win and have bragging rights until a possible Cotton Bowl game some day. A Cotton Bowl game with aTm would definitely be a made for TV event though and fun to watch.

I think aTm is going to be slated for the Fiesta Bowl at this point anyways. Would set up a matchup with Notre Dame or Oklahoma depending on how things shake out.

Best thing honestly for Texas would be to win out and hope Mack calls it quits after a Cotton Bowl berth against maybe either LSU or UGA/Bama. If they stumble I see him definitely wanting to come back and I don't think anyone is going to get rid of him yet.
