If Tommy Tuberville had this offense at Auburn.....

  • He might have went undefeated 7 years in a row.

  • Well I think the players were just as explosive but the style...not so much, dive dive toss punt haha and every 3 drives mix in a play action, tubbs would sit on a 10 point lead with auburn all day

  • Jason Campbell, Ronnie, Caddy, Devin, Ben, Courtney, ect in this offense would be scary.

  • Glad Tubs is gone. Chizik showed his colors today and got mudholed. AU is an absolute joke and I cannot wait to go to Jordah Hare.

Yeah but they were pretty scary in Borges offense anyway. I'm talking about all the othe teams to go along with all those great defenses.

Chiziks doing a decent job. No one expected them to play LSU close.

  • Close. Come on.

If Tubs had this offense at AU, then he wouldn't have had the stifling defenses that he did.

You are what you practice against. If you're practicing against a soft O that wants to hand it off from the shotgun on 4th and 1/2 yard from the 3 like Texas Tech did last night, then you're not going to be able to handle the pro-style, downhill-running Os that the SEC brings to the table.

The spread O and an imposing D are mutually exclusive. This has been proven time and time again.

You'll be able to see this as Tubs, who ALWAYS had salty Ds, won't be able to put a solid D on the field in his tenure at TTech, despite having talented high schoolers in droves all around him.

That is false. Florida ran the spread and still had very good defenses in 06 and 08. I know we sort of had a power running game with Tebow but I still disagree with you to a certain degree.

If you want to argue that there is ANY similarity between what Florida did with Tebow and what Texas Tech, Houston, Okie State, etc are doing, then you're barking up the wrong tree. They couldn't be more different.

The "spread" with Tebow at UF and with Cam at AU was nothing but power football out of the shotgun.

But even more to my point, which teams did Urban Meyer have the toughest time with while at UF on defense? Bama, LSU, and AU (under Tubs), all of whom were downhill rushing teams were the teams who put the UF defense on its butts.

  • You can't categorize every spread as soft. That offense didn't look soft last night. The OL was manhandling the OU defensive front, the RB was running with authority and their QB is tough as nails.

Of course. Read the post above about Tebow/Cam's version of the spread. Those weren't soft.

As for Tech's offense, they are as soft as cotton and looked so last night to me. Gaining big yards on an occasional draw isn't running with authority. Tech averaged 2.8 yards per carry and their biggest plays came on screens and fades all game. Their RB is a scat back and he gained over half of his 80 yards on 3 carries on long down and distance situations.

They scored over 40 points, none of which came via their RBs on the ground. The only times they tried to run with their backs in the redzone, they went backwards.

But seriously, we have seen the West Coast, pass-happy, spread Os for well over a decade now and you can't name me a single team that utilized it (out of the hundreds) that had a dominant D. That includes quite a few BCS teams.

The only teams that have come close have been TCU and Boise, IMO.
