I thought it was a great question

    Should make a great thread

  • Okay I'll bite. By Christians do you mean Orthodox greeks or Pentecostal snake handlers? Maybe Episcopalians or AME Baptists.

In a majority of Muslim countries the religion is the state. What are you fishing for?

yeah, the guy who wrote this paper seems to have it nailed down well...

he is saying that the major backlash from christian groups has not met any free speech hurdles and that their argumnts are always, and only, self-serving and, were another religion to overtake them and insert their symbols and god's name into a pledge of allegiance, their position would most likely change as, already stated, it is merely partisan and self-serving

    nice little nugget

In 1773, the Rev. Isaac Backus , the most prominent Baptist minister in New England, observed that when "church and state are separate, the effects are happy, and they do not at all interfere with each other: but where they have been confounded together, no tongue nor pen can fully describe the mischiefs that have ensued."

  • So you've narrowed your interpretation of "Christians" down to the politically active right wingers so it will fit your hypothesis.

    Classic liberal activist thinking.

so i should tell the guy that the word christians does not describe their special interest group, or the majority of those who bristle under the weight of not having the ten commandments in a courtroom?

really... so he should call them non-christians.

really, i know you're trolling, but seriously...

so, if i were to critique your argument for fallacies, i would use this, reprinted from the study guide:

There are several stories told about the origin of "red herring," but they all seem to involve throwing a pursuer off of the trail by using a powerful scent. In argument, a red herring is usually a topic tangential to the argument at hand, but a topic that introduces strong emotion. For example, someone might claim that television cannot harm children because it holds their attention for hours and keeps them off the street. The real issue is whether television is harmful, but the arguer has cleverly manipulated us away from that issue on to the issue of whether television keeps children off of the street. Here’s another example:

Nuclear energy is our best source of energy so it cannot be bad. [What is the real issue here? What is the diversionary issue?]

now, if you don't mind, Mr Pomeroy, who wrote this paper, deserves better

the warrant for his minor premise, that their arguments are merely self-serving, is Christian outrage at the idea of Sharia law...

his paper is built on some shaky assertions, but I think if he makes a few subtle changes it iwll be much better, and much more convincing

Any christian or non christian understands that TV is a helpful diversion but in abundance a harmful one. Any wise christian or non christian understand the streets are dangerous and the only way to avoid the perils is to be proactive in your childs life at an early age. The whole red herring/ nuclear energy arguments are so simplified that if this is a college paper i would consider rethinking your main body unless you want a B- or a C

Not trolling...it's just obvious. If Muslims were to become a minority in Iran they probably would have a different outlook on the relationship of religion and state...DUHHHH! A five year old could figure this out.
