i think it'd be almost impossible for us not to know.
at least if it was some kind of natural disaster, like asteroid or something.
those things are observable for days if not weeks/months/years before they happen.
plus, when has our gov been able to keep anything a secret?
and even if our gov were competent, there are at least a handful of other govs that could/would spill the beans.
you're talking about the silencing of multiple (corrupt and incompetent) govs, as well as basically the whole scientific community, not to mention the myriad of amateurs (which have found most of the best stuff first anyway) and keeping it from getting on the internet not 1 single time.
i don't buy it.
now if it is something that is impossible to know until it happens, then of course we won't know about it. but then, neither would the govs.
btw, my vote is for a supervolcano. won't detroy the world, but would be the end of us as we know it.
yellowstone is already 40K years overdue, and major volcanoes are almost always preceded by major earthquakes. and we've had a slew of those recently, and in an increasing pattern.
