If we go over "the Cliff"

  • It is not going to happen, I agree. Even if it did happen, people would do nothing. We've become quite apathetic to our government's incompetence. In fact, I would say most people would re-elect this same group of idiots, while expecting them to "finally" get better.

This system we have does not work. People fail to see that and fail to make any changes.

Heck, I would say 70%, at least, of households in our country don't follow a budget, so they don't care if Congress follows one or not. Who needs fiscal responsibility??

I think the apathy that you correctly observe is due to the fact that for all the recession, Cliff, and future bankruptcy talk everyone who gets up and goes to work still has enough in America. If we were to experience an actual recession the ish would hit the fan.

Well, if we do not go over the cliff, we will run a deficit of around 1.5 Trillion this year. The magic number where we start entering the point of no return is about 28-30 trillion in total debt (10 times annual tax receipts). Once that happens, war is the only answer.

Even if we go over the cliff, we are still looking at a deficit of 800 billion. And I thought the republicans in congress were going to stop the spending.

Well, republicans can't do anything with a minority in Congress.

They have the majority in the House. Their problem is a small portion of the party, the Tea Partyers, are holding the rest of them hostage. They won't even accept taxes being put back to the levels under Clinton for those making over $1 million.

Its bullshit plain and simple. Me and wife make good money but by no means are "wealthy" and we would be hit for a couple more grand a year. I paid over $20,000 this year in taxes (State, Federal, Medicaid, SS etc). There is no way they should need a penny more from me and my family. Unreal how hard-working Americans who are doing everything they can to lead a good life and support their family are getting screwed!

Dems want to extend the Bush tax cuts for the middle class, those making under 250k per year and roll the tax levels back to what they were under Clinton for those making more. Doesn't seem all that unreasonable.

Being involved in public policy now, I can tell you that calling your elected US rep does make a difference...especially if they reside in a competitive district.

They can make them retroactive to the 1st of January. From what I have heard in DC, and normally my contacts are great except with the last election, say we are going over but they will fix it with the new congress. I was told this the beginning of December.

The dems and repubs and tea partiers are too blame bc they only care about who wins and loses, not about the country anymore. It is time to change the constitution back to the way it was, when the general assembly of each state elected the senators and not the people. The house represented the people and the senate represented the states.

  • For every dollar Clinton raised in taxes Newt cut three dollars in spending. Our president is proposing 75 cents of cuts per dollar. The media only talks about Clinton tax rates, never his spending levels. He even caved and allowed welfare reform. I would love to see a modern day democrat attempt that. Obama's new taxes will fund the government for two months. We have a spending problem that(love them or hate them) only Ron Paul type congressmen have the will to address.

No doubt there is a spending problem that needs to be addressed. Problem is telling Americans who have learned to wrack up debt on credit cards to change their ways. This goes for individuals and the government.

I think you are partially correct there. To me, working class people are apathetic mainly because they know they still MUST work everyday to maintain their life comforts and they know the government is going to screw them over one way or another regardless of what administration is in the oval office.
The upper class is mainly fixated on using loopholes to futher build their wealth, while "investing" in the politicians who give them those gracious loopholes. They can still reduce their pre tax income to preserve themselves.
The lower class has quickly become a class that mainly just accepts where they are as long as the government continues to meet their basic needs. They don't feel the need to join the rat race that is the middle class, because it means they will have to pay more taxes and might struggle to meet the needs the government is already giving to them.

It is a sad situation, and our government's ignorant policies, such as "spend your budget or lose funds next year" is just assinine. USG organizations should work on a "save ___% of your budget" or risk being privatized, downsized, or other measures. We simply cannot afford to keep running our country the way it has been ran.

I like it. I'd rather go over the cliff. We have a spending problem so maybe we need to raise taxes so high that it causes 75% of the country to slip into poverty level. Maybe only then will people wake up and vote all the thieves out of office.
