    Really good info. Thanks.

As a designer/advertiser, I can only dream of making $50K+ right out of school. lol

No problem. I started at 42k out of school in '04. The other opps were in the 30-35k range. I figure anything is better than nothing if you enjoy it. To give a comparison, we start our Engineering (or related) grads at around 55k, and a marketing grad last year at around 40k, and my recruiting intern is probably looking at 35-40 when she grads and goes full time. All of these roles are in CA.

International Business is definitely worth a look. I would say take a gander at Public Relations as well.

But some of these guys will probably have much better advice than I do.

Thanks. I've also thought about picking a certain part of the world and studying it hard. For example, Italian studies, Asian studies, Arabic studies, etc.

Hey guys, I have a question. I'm majoring in International Affairs and want to go to grad school, but I'm not sure what I want to study in grad school. Don't want to go to law school.

Would my best option be to pursue a Masters in International Affairs or go to grad school for business? What are some other good options?

That's pretty good actually. The average starting salary for designers (in competitive markets) is around $28K. I'm hoping that with a Masters and my internships I can start out above an entry-level designer position. If so I'd probably be looking at around $35K. Looking hard at the Atlanta area as well.

But like you said, enjoying what you do is the most important. I'm willing to start out a little slower salary wise because I really do love what I do.

Sea hand? Commercial pilot? Travel agent? Cruise Ship entertainment? Event planner?

Don't need a masters degree for that. You can be a stewardess for southwest.

Actually, doesn't FSU have a circus school? You could be in the traveling circus!

Not to mention how the unpaid internship system contributes to the plutocratization (is that a word? do i care?) of our society. Kids from less affluent backgrounds who have to work paying jobs to support themselves while in college are shut out from the unpaid internship system because they simply can't afford to participate. In turn, this means those kids have a much harder time finding good jobs right out of college, which dampens their lifetime earning potential...and around and around the vicious circle goes.

One summer in college we drove out to DC for the 4th of July and ended up meeting up with some friends who were doing government internships out there over the summer. I was amazed when they told me that they actually had to pay to get those internships, something I was in no position to do as I had to work all summer just to help pay the college bills. Not that I wanted to get into politics but just reinforced the point that only the affluent can afford these types of things.

Yup... are you going to go the Public Accounting route? Worth it if you're OK with slaving away for a few yrs....

  • No internships? Shit, good luck with that in the broadcasting field. Internships and who you know are the only 2 factors in landing a job early on in my field.

I don't make much money at all but my resume is loaded and I've networked like a mofo. I'm set up now to land my own sports talk show beginning in August that paired with a PBP gig I'm leading for will have me making decent money for a non-married 25-year old.

How will your pay compare to the 25 year old married homosexual demographic?
