Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech OT Dennis Finley and DT Kenton Gibbs talk about their high interest in the Illini.

  • I wonder about Gibbs though...Michigan may get him if they want him.

No question a Michigan offer changes the whole dynamic for his recruitment.

I feel like Kenton Gibbs is our Dennis Norfleet of this year. If we've got an extra spot and a need for an extra DT right around signing day, we could probably offer and flip him.

  • Gibbs has looked pretty good in camps, I wonder if Michigan strikes out on some higher rated DL's if Michigan offers him.

He's cat quick off the ball and plays with good pad level. I think he's going to be a good Big Ten player.

  • Dennis Finley certainly has the size you're looking for. He's going to be a monster of a human being once he goes through a college strength program. He's long. A lot of physical upside with this young man.

  • Thank you for the updates Steve. I hope Gibbs gets that offer. I like seeing local talent playing for Michigan. (Not complaining about the Magnuson types either.)

  • If you had to choose between Kenton Gibbs and Berkley Edwards, who would u take in a "Norfleet type situation"?

My heart says Edwards, but Gibbs makes more sense.

wow, that's a great question. hard to say.

Gibbs is listed between 6'1" and 6"2", 270-280 pounds. Not great size, but good enough with room to max out at close to 300. His game seems to be more of a penetrating DT or a 3-tech as I believe it's called in Mattison's system. I am not sure on our numbers at that position, but I was more under the impression that Michigan needs a NT or a 1-tech as he calls them- a big body, like 6'3/6'4, 320+ like Ondre Pipkins was. I think Henry Poggi is the #1 "3-tech" on Mattison's wish-list, and I think whether or not Gibbs gets an offer will depend on what Poggi does.

Berkley Edwards is listed between 5'8" and 5'9", 170-180 pounds. Not great size either, but certainly good enough with room to grow. Berkley has great speed. This kid has been tested in the mid 4.3's and low 4.4's time and time again, he can fly. But Michigan already has Deveon Smith and if they get Ty Isaac they are pretty much set at RB.

If it was up to me, I'd try and find room and take both. I'd get the class to go up to 26-28. I know people hate hearing that, because that means the coaches would have to run people off the team to find spots...but you know what...that's life.

Honestly, Gibbs to me looks like he can definitely play in the B1G, whether he'll be a star or not, who knows, but he looks to me like he at least belongs on a B1G roster. Berkley Edwards has speed, and that's the one thing they aren't teaching these days. Other than size as well of course.
