I'm getting a neck tattoo

  • I already have ten tats now but I've made up my mind and am doing this now. I know that some of you will kill me and call me trash but this isn't something that is going to hurt my career. I'm a part owner of two businesses and have my professional engineering license in three states and am a partner, not monetarily more BOD position, but I still make good money on my day job as well. I have tats on my forearms, but outside of that, the others you can't see if I'm in dress pants and a golf shirt but I usually wear dress shirts.

I've wanted this tattoo for a while though and I've decided I'm doing it. Pic provided. Make fun all you want, but I don't really give a shit.

  • That's a lot of tattoos.

My wife mentioned back when her sister started getting them that very few people seem to have just one tattoo. It's almost like an addiction of some sort, where you can't just get one.

Off the topic, but what kind of engineering, RATT?

    I am a hydraulic engineer psu62.

I specialize in the wastewater/water side of things. I do the design of a lot of WWTP's (private and public) in all kind of different nitrogen and phosphorus limitations, lift stations, water towers, pneumatic well systems in the mountains, collection and distribution systems (gravity, pressure and vacuum), even upscale septic systems in areas that have sorry soil (surface and subsurface drip irrigatrion systems) and everything that goes along with that field.

I also do a lot of residential (although not as much any more) land development schematics and permitting. Stormwater management, sedimentation & erosion control planning, parking to road graving and permitting for residential subdevelopments along with smaller business developments.

Most of my tattoos, all but two of them, are all biomechanical designs. They have no meaning or anything and I just personally like the art side of it. I know people will call that stupid but it's just something I personally like.

It looked like an elephant trunk headed down the middle. I didn't want to say anything and look stupid, but it's a cool design.

Tats aren't for me, but to each their own. My favorite roofer has the Texas longhorn tattooed onto the back of his head, so I don't discriminate.

Awesome. Quite a variety of stuff.

I'm working on my doctorate in mechanical engineering (thermal/fluids side). Looking at extreme condition engine injection (high temp/high pressure). Guess we don't overlap much, but nice to "meet" a fellow engineer.

F what people think. All my close friends are tatted up. I personally only have one and got it 10 years ago so I'm the odd man out when we all go out.

    Ughhhhh,

I took thermo in college and HATED it lol

That was a tough class but you are dealing more than you think with what I am doing on the civil side. You are still dealing with fluids and viscosity whereas there are other civil's that specialize in structures, construction or even geotech (soil). Of course mechanical engineering goes in all sorts of directions as well.

Yeah I have never really cared what people think honestly. I just wanted to have a reason to show the design I'm getting done and see some feedback on that. I really like these bio-mechanical designs and just figured I would see if anyone else liked the style that I do. I mean with 8 other large sized one's it's a little late but I think they are fvcking cool personally.

I'm getting it done Saturday either way. It's going to be about an 8 hour venture though.

Dude, you're going to sit for 8 hours? Damn. Four is my limit.

Hell I've done 8 hour sitting periods on six of my tattoos. Most of mine, well half, are two to three sitting tats.

Edit: I usually get the all the border done and thick work done first day, shading or color the second, and finish up details after that once the s abs gets gone to touch them up.

looks awesome, came in to say be wary of neck tattoos for career issues but sounds like you've got yourself covered.

My guy says he doesn't let people sit for more than four hours b/c the endorphins start wearing off and they start moving around too much.

I usually take a couple of vicoden which helps and it's not like I sit down for the whole 8 hours either.

My friend does my tattoos and runs the Tattoo Jungle off of Chalkville Mountain Road in Trussville, AL. Anyone from Alabama can attest to the place. He's damn good.

Anyway, we will go for about two to three hours and then smoke a few cigarettes, maybe a blunt, and will take snacks and stuff while it's going on. We probably waste an hour and a half of that 8 hours.

No it's some kind of biomechanical design. I think it's a mix of a bomb, clock and alien all in one depending on how you look at it.

  • I have no problem with tatts unless they are somewhere you can't cover them. You know that jobs in this state aren't easy to come by. What happens if everything falls apart and you are on the job market again? A PE isn't going to save you. It will help a ton but you will get looked down upon in the engineering profession for having it.

  • Good for you if you can pull it off man. I have work done on both arms and my chest, and I'm keeping my visible spots un-inked because I'm working to become a teacher. That is a nice design and its gonna hurt like hell, especially given the detail. Good luck

I am a part owner of two businesses, not an employee an owner, and a partner at my engineering firm (the third). I get what you are saying, but I wouldn't do it if I wasn't an owner or partner.

I have one that takes up the entire left rib section of my body from chest to hip and some of my stomach. If I can take that, I can take the side of the neck. If you can do the ribs and stomach, you can do anything.

Go for it man. I have full sleeves and both of my legs are tatted from the knees down, plus my back is covered, but I pulled a Yakuza style. No tats that can't be covered. The only reason I don't have a neck tatt is out of respect for my ultra conservative grandmother.

She'd have a,heart attack if they saw my ink. I like that idea for your neck. My whole right arm is black and grey biomechanical. My left arm is a black and grey I designed that incorporates potraits of icons in my life amongst other things. My back is a biomechanical HR Giger piece. It took a long, long time and cost a pretty penny. Love the bio work.
