I'm so sick of hear FSU has an SEC style defense...

  • FSUTrackLove said...

One player does not make the SEC or Bama the blueprint... I just don't think many other players on Bama or any other SEC team can be equivelant to the style that the south's defenses play now.

There are only a handful of fan bases outside of the SEC that realize defense is important.

All of those doppelgangers out there think when their zippy, cool offense gets shellacked that just need to improve upon it's efficiency. They refuse to truly acknowledge that defense is more than that annoying thing the rule book says you have to do between offensive positions.

As for it being termed "SEC style" well, history is written by the winners.

No. Pretty sure Alabama had athletic defenses in the 80's. Derrick Thomas had 26 sacks in one year.

Derrick Thomas was a Hall of Famer. Guarantee you that those Bama defenses weren't anywhere near the level of those FSU and Miami defenses. Terrell Suggs had a shitload of sacks one year. Doesn't mean the Arizona St defense was some trendsetting phenomonon. I'd have understood some if you'd said the Oklahoma defenses of the '80s with Bosworth. Those were good ones as well. Still didn't hold a candle to those FSU/Miami defenses and it was proven on the field a few times.

How did our "on par with" UF, SCAR, and MSST, play against two of those teams in recent past? With a defense I do not consider on this years level.

Noobs everywhere. Calm down there little buddy.

  • A lot of people have credited FSU and miami with revolutionizing the game, and forcing teams to recruit better players to keep up.

I didn't know FSU was taking credit for Miami's glory. Interesting. You do know that during this time from 1980-1990 that FSU was revolutionizing football, they had a losing record against Florida and Auburn. Not to mention, but this team FSU was supposedly teaming up with was 8-3 against them during that time.

The only blueprint FSU created was the join a crappy conference, dominate it, and ride that to national exposure. Boise did follow suit, so I guess one team went along with it.

Too bad VaTech came along and ruined that. lol

Whatever when was the last time an SEC team looked good against FSU? Oh the same time an SEC team was destroying the SEC...lol

lol, just messing with you. FSU does have a good D this year. The only problem for you guys in a National Title game with either Bama or LSU is both of us have much better OLine play.

Whoa......... I never said those 80 defenses of Alabama were as good as some of the FSU and Miami defenses. I just don't believe they put any sort of blueprint out there to model by. They just had better players and were pulling in tremendous talent. Would be like me saying Barry Switzer invented the wishbone. He didn't but he sure ran it better than anyone else. Clearly, FSU an Miami's ability to pull in better talent than other elite teams in the south is gone. That's why they're no longer just flat better than everyone else. I'm not saying FSU doesn't have a great defense this year. I'm just saying that they probably won't be tested until they line up against a team of equal value at every phase of te game. Like when Alabama plays Lsu.

  • BetterOff, what did I say that was wrong? I fail to see how you could misconstrue my post as coming from a person who is "mad." We beat a Florida team, who's defense you equate to ours, last year. We beat South Carolina in 2010 in the bowl game, by knocking out their best player. I am not saying we are Bama or LSU's defensive level, as we are not. However, we are better than the teams that were mentioned as our equal ITT.

Derrick Thomas recorded 27 sacks in 1988, but the NCAA did not start collecting official defensive statistics until 2000, but I'm sure you knew that..

  • Agreed. No doubt FSU has a great d-line and good secondary, but who has heard of their LB'ers?

I think FSU has a very good defense, but I'm not sold on them being 'elite' just yet.

Our LBs are just as good they just really don't get a chance to show it because of the line being too good... Our defensive scheme makes them shadows...

    1-90s ACC was not crap
2-vtech has beaten us twice since joining the ACC and has a 22-11 all time record vs us.
    3. I stated previously that FSU copied Miami and UF copied us and took it to the SEC and won almost every SEC title...

  • Because Jimbo Fisher has NO SEC influence or background. Why in the world would he want his team to play like an SEC team?

EDIT: Not meant to be a flame, FSU has a fantastic defensive background. We have an old school DC in Chavis, been around the SEC for 20-30 years coaching defense.. And a throwback HC and we look like an old Big 10 team (A conference built on power O and D, they should also get some credit here, IMO)

Why? Because of Clemson? I'll wait until you play a team that has half of a functional OL. You guys are much like us without the LSU game. You won't be tested until you line up against another top 3 team. We all know what Clemson is.

Dude on what earth do you have to play a top 3 team to know you have an elite defense? I understand you have to play competition better than what we have to "prove" it to everybody but you can also prove it by simply sustaining you're level of play throughout the year by dominating those who are in front of you. We can't help who we play but we know how high our potential is and we know we're an elite defense.

And although I get your point of " you need to play a top 3 team....", you have to realize only a handful of teams are even given the opportunity to play teams ranked that high so it's unrealistic to use that as a bench mark for everyone. You can still be an elite defense and simply dominate those in front you

Not sure why that would be thbe measuring stick honestly, if I can be allowed to stop trolling for a minute. I agree with you. I think anyone can understand the skeptics on FSU right now. It's because of 2 FCS schools and WF. Tomorrow will answer a little more of course. Personally I think Clemson sucks, but I could be wrong. Even without Watkins, there is no way Auburn should have been able to hang with them, much less move the ball like they did.
