I'm very pleased about this hospital not hiring obese people....

You didn't even have to read the article. The first couple sentences of the article linked in the first post included:

"Citizens Medical Center has instituted a policy which requires that [b]all[/] employees have a body mass index of less than 35."

Hey it's their hospital. When I lived in North Carolina there were a slew of hospital workers that got canned for being smokers. Maybe in their experience people with BMI's of over 35 were terrible employees. I really don't know. I don't see a big difference in canning someone for being a smoker at a hospital than not hiring someone for being fat as hell. I never saw the arguments for the smokers so I don't really get the issue here. It's a medical health establishment and being fat as fvck isn't portraying medical health. Just my opinion but that's how I feel.

Im tired of paying for it and looking at it. And yes I am a Christian, these people need tough love.

That's cool. When I'm an employer I'll avoid hiring Christians because they're hypocritical and self-righteous POS' who don't embody what they claim to believe.

I think people that are naturally better and stronger and more intelligent and have more self-control, like you, should be able to dictate to every one else how to look and how to appear to others and even what to eat and when and how much.

You seem to be very well grounded and could make decisions like this for people that lack decision making skills.

If only our politicians were more like you, we would all be living in a wonderland.

Your attempts to muddy the debate with these semi-witty rhetorical responses isn't impressive. Add something or don't.

We're talking about a choice people are making that financially damages others and how it can be stopped.

People keep talking about how being obese doesn't portray an ideal health care worker. I get it. Fat people usually aren't healthy. However, this hospital is about job PERFORMANCE.

For many that is true. But in their hypocrisy they simply end up looking like all the other applicants.

  • R.A.T.T. has a great point. Unless a hospital really is in the business of hoping people get sick because they profit then they should be educating and enabling people to not have to come back. When you go to a hospital and there are obese workers outside smoking cigarettes it just sends a ridiculous message. IYAM

Well I'm assuming that they have had experience in that area and there are more than a few people applying for the same job. You really don't know how they will perform on the job until they are hired. The powers that be think that it's a risk for some reason. I'm assuming that you aren't someone that is the main man or woman in hiring someone at a hospital for no reason. I'll take his or her opinion over the assumption that they don't know what they are doing.

Where did I say anyone doing the hiring doesn't know what they're doing? I only said I don't really understand how a doctor can look at someone who is obese, applying for a job that has no physical labor required, and say they shouldn't be hired because they can't perform the task.

  • They wont hire obese people, then they shouldnt hire smokers or drinkers also.

I am not obese but if you are going to discriminate against one group of unhealthy people. then discriminate against others also.

I would rather be around somebody obese than a person who smells like a damn ashtray all the time, and has to put on so much cologne they only smell worse.

Then their teeth and their nasty hacking cough and digusting smelling house from their smoke, are horrible! Lets not hire them also because they are to lazy to quit being the way they are!

It is their right to be the way they are, and it is our right to be in the healthy shape we are.

Like I said in an earlier post. I know of several hospitals that have shitcanned people for smoking. It's becoming more and more common.

I'm not attacking you Gonig and you should know me that way by now. You make a valid argument and your argument just fits my rebuttal the best. Don't take it personal because you make valid points.

Why would a clinically insane person be hired in the first place. If it's so obvious, they wouldn't be hired at all. Being obese wouldn't affect a job where you're answering phones/working on the computer, but being crazy certainly would.

It's not about the image. It's about being able to do the work. The article says that.

I have the same question as why would a physically unhealthy person be hired at a health clinic.

Because they are not sending the message that a health clinic would want to send.

  • I laugh because all of you want to ban fatties like they tried to rid Germany of Jews.

Who's next, drinkers and pot smokers? They will have terrible liver problems and lung disease. Then blondes because they are more likely to get melanoma. Breast augmentation is unhealthy, ban it. Burgers and fries-gone. Pizza, down the road.

You stupid Nazi a-holes think that once the people who don't fit your idea of normal are gone they won't turn on you for something like the fact that your grandparents had cancer or that you have a physical deformity.

I'll bet half the people hating in this thread would fail a physical fitness test.

How do you feel about overweight doctors and nurses? Would you think less of their diagnoses because of the way they look?

Well I smoke, drink and like pot.

I'm just not in the healthcare business. I design WWTP's, sewer systems and pump stations. I personally don't care if this hospital hires fatties or not. I'm just saying that I can see why possibly a hiring manager would want to go in another direction for a healthcare institution.

Also really comparing not hiring a fat person at a hospital to genocide of a race/religion is a big jump. Give me a fvcking break.

Although that is rare(Only know of 1 possibly 2 that I have ever seen overweight) I would prefer my doctor lead a good healthy lifestyle.

No, I just think people should be healthy if they are going to work in a health clinic.

I was in the hospital for two weeks last year and the best three nurses I had were all obese. They were smarter and much more care oriented than the other "prettier" nurses. Not saying that it was because they were fat I'm just saying if the hospital I was in had this policy my care would have suffered.

I'd rather have the hospital start a mandatory exercise program flexible enough for the entire staff. That and serving healthy cafeteria food helps. Most hospitals serve the same crap everyone else does unless you request diet or diabetic meals.

I believe you. That indeed could be the case in other places, I just think that they should be healthy themselves(For me it is more of the image of the hospital, although if you are good at what you do im not too caring about it I don't suppose)

I am a (very soon to be)doctor of obesity, not a medical doctor. I work in community health promotion, primarily in schools. On my staff are 8 nurses; all are obese, 3 of them being morbidly so(50+ BMI). I did not hire them, with all the work they do regarding obesity/exercise/nutrition, it certainly would have been a factor had I been the one hiring them. I would not so openly refuse to hire people on the basis of weight status, but in my work environment I feel strongly that it should be a factor. As a private organization that can choose to hire or not hire whomever they want. I am not saying I agree, but I do like the sentiment that people are beginning to take it seriously.

Dang, I am surprised by that number honestly. I just would think that the people who know the severity of complications that obesity increases would be more inclined to avoid it.
