Someone's mad. I'm actually quite familiar with his history. It's mostly northern based, with no experience in the south. If he was such a solid hire, he would have been contacted earlier, not the 7th or 8th choice. Fact is he has zero recruiting ties in a recruiting area that is meh at best. Morons ITT comparing him to Urban and Kelly need to have their heads examined. It was an underwhelming hire where UTjr. settled once again. Ask most of their fans, and they'll tell you the same.

Many USC fans were underwhelmed with Pete Carrol when he was their 3rd or 4th choice and it worked out well. You are familiar with his history? Does that mean you read his wikipedia page? Have you ever watched his teams, or actually done any concrete research on the guy? Doubtful.

UT might have gotten their 3rd choice, but that by no means he is a bad coach. I have no idea if Butch will succeed at UT, but anyone like you predicting certain failure without a lick of knowledge of how the guy runs his teams is funny.

  • who was the last coach at UC before Butch(haha I said Butch.. anyways)?? Oh wait.. Brian Kelly.. hmmm interesting.. I dont really care to be honest, but it seems to be a good launching pad for good coaches in years past.. Tenn might just get lucky.. I just hope I don't have to see a story on Butch wearing orange pants..nono

The guy was 3rd choice for UT at best. I have not talked to many of their fans that are happy about the hire either. Its hard to call your 3rd string guy a home run, no matter what his past.

As for the Mich v. SC game. I don't think it is a blowout like some of you, I do think we win though. Probably around a 30 - 21 type game.

I'd wait and see before calling anything a failure, and plenty of programs have not gotten their first choice before hiring an excellent coach.

I know plenty of Michigan fans were furious about the Hoke hire originally, especially after going for the likes of Miles and Harbaugh and failing. But I'd doubt you find many Michigan fans who aren't for the most part happy about the Hoke hire now.

It can easily work out for Tennessee, and lots of football people seem to respect Butch Jones. I think the guy will work out for UT in the end, certainly better than there last two hires.

I don't think I have said he will definitely fail, I just don't think it is a great hire. I think for UT you need a BIG name coach, with strong ties to the South East. There is very little talent in Tenn., and you have to be able to recruit nationally to thrive there. I'm just not sure he fits the mold. I could be wrong.

Everyone is listing the few instances where coaches came from the big east and thrived, or where teams settled and the coach thrived. For every success story there are ten busts. I'm not saying its a definite that he tanks, but the odds are not in his favor. At the end of the day I expected a better hire out of a school like UTjr. Especially with those new amazing facilities they just built.

Who did you expect us to hire? Gruden? lol wasn't going to happen. Fisher? not going to happen. Gundy? Not going to happen. Strong didn't want to leave his team because he has very high character and with the amount of money he will make coaching a team that should be very good next year was too much to leave. Do you realize that the only realistic hires were Butch Jones, Greg Roman, and maybe Kirby Smart. Nobody else wanted to leave their current situation. All Butch does is win and he has head coaching experience. He turned down numerous jobs because of his interest in Tennessee. He brings intensity and integrity and championships to Tennessee. This might have been the best hire possible.

  • Tressel was third choice of Ohio State when he was hired, Mike Belotti and Glen Mason were the first and second choices, Tressel was third choice and he had a nice ten year run that was tarnished at the end, but still a nice ten year run so don't be too quick to judge the third option.

    Agree.

This will not be a blow out for the simple reason that Mich has some heart and no way do they roll over and quit like UGAy the first time they get punched in the mouth...

No way we punk'em like we did UGAy...I'll say Carolina 34--7.

If he can get Bray to stay for next season, he could build a lot of momentum at UT quickly. I think this is a very good hire, if Butch Jones is smart he hires Troop Taylor to help with recruiting immediately.

    Bad idea

Of course they won't be as bad as UGA....that is a given.

Haha these USCjr fans have some balls nowadays, once Spurrier leaves it will be back to the same old Cocks. Saban and Miles where both northern guys with no ties, not impressive records before they got an SEC job either...I like how you say UTjr even though we are older than Texas, but no matter, glad y'all have finally won a few against us...traditionally USCjr is a garbage program and UT is one of the most prestigious...lol troll on

Saban and miles only had to recruit in their respective states bc of the talent. The state of Tennessee does not produce highschool talent like Louisiana or Alabama, which means more national recruiting. UTs new coach doesn't have that same national appeal imo.

Derek freaking Dooley got a top ten class his first year...let that sink in...if he can do it anyone can, all CBJ has to do us be the opposite as Dooley with the coaches of recruits, he will be fine, maybe not top five consistantly but really how much of a difference is there in one and ten. He could fall flat on his face but all the former players love the guy and our team is bought in, that means way more than a name or "ties" to the south. And by the way CBJ had many Florida and Georgia players he brought to Cincy

In state talent is not looking so bad lately.... There's this guy name Hurd who just so happens to play in Tennessee.
