Is 2pac the greatest rapper of all time?

  • I like Pac, but he's not the best rapper ever. Him and Biggie probably had the biggest influence on rap and most artists in the genre today would say that they listened to them growing up. There are plenty of artists with much better lyrical abilities, though. They've all been stated itt.

  • people on here saying someone is the best rapper just because he was the most influential need to understand those words better.

Chuck Berry influenced rock and roll more than anyone in the history of music, but hes not the GOAT. Its silly to think that way

    Who is better?

The guy I saw at my High School talent show to begin with.

My favorite is either Inspectah Deck or the GZA. Ghost Face Killah is insanely talented as well. They all were really. When Method Man and UGod are probably the weakest of the bunch, you know you have a very, very talented group.

Inspectah Deck's verse at the beginning of "Triumph" is probably the best verse I've ever heard though.

I actually thought Ol' Dirty was the weakest. He's still a beast though. Wu-Tang is definitely amazing. I agree with you GZA is the best of the bunch.

Always been a big fan of KRS-One as well.

I would also like to nominate Jay-Z, Scarface and drumroll please,

RAKIM, who is the absolute best IMHO

+1 for Rakim. I personally never got the whole Tupac craze. I never thought he was good at all. I like Biggie alot more. Nas, is a lyrical beast. Most of the Wu-Tang. Jay-Z's older stuff. I always thought Canibus had ill lyrics and was clever as hell. Big Pun dtopped some tight shit back in the day. KRS One was the king of battle mcing. Actually, I think that kid Eyedea was the most raw battle mc ever. Even though, I can't stand him, Eminem is on another level lyrically. I think there's a bunch of MC's better then Tupac. He was way overrated imo.

Yeah I really do. I think 2-pac had some borderline personality disorder issues. Doesn't make him any less talented than he was though. As an all around creative person and talented when it came to music, acting, etc, he was probably as good as anyone. He was a creative genius, but he had some mental shit going on inside his head. He as much as admitted that on several occasions.

I'm from Cali so I like different rappers
2PAC, E-40, too-short, ice cube more my style

Of course 2PAC is the G.O.A.T. He won 75% of his freestyle rap battles against southern rappers. The dirty south, wu-tang, Biggie, Southern/ East Coast rap ain't got nothing on west coast rap. According to the party, West coast knew How to Party in 90% of all parties
    OOCali.

Also Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, 2Short, Cubed Ice, and 2PAC never lost a rap battle in Cali, and their SOS was a few dimes filthier than those ol Bastards in the Dirty had to deal with, and the Cali Syndicate still dropped a double nickel in win %.

PAC was highly underrated in Live concert performances on big stages, headlining 80% of the shows he did with platinum selling southern artists in the rap game since the 9-trey. West coast all day everyday.

Just FYI (Yes, I am making fun of myself and my stats in ITT )

Finally...(from back when I listened to rap, when it was good)

"I gotta letter from the government, the other day. I opened and read it, it said they were suckers. * So I start my mission, leave my residence, thinkin how could I get some dead presidents. * No parole or probation, now this a young man's summer vacation. * Keep the crossover * and Boogie down with KRS 1 * I Don't like to get ill, but if I have to I kill, so believe me boy, you gots to chill. Lol. Actually people from Baltimore don't understand Tupac. When he lived in BMore he went to the School of Arts and wore tu-tu's and did balay dancing. Then a few years later he's claiming to be "Thug Life" and some kind of gangster who reps NY, Baltimore, Cali. Lol. Come on man!!!

Dude's an entertainer, not a gangster which is cool, but why pretend to be something you're not? Especially when he'd claim to "keep it real" in every one of his songs. Just because you get shot doesn't mean you're a thug. People who know about where he stayed at know he's fake. White and black. I guess he sold you though so his hustle wasn't too bad.

Lol. You got me. Actually, growing up where I did you're forced to have black friends because there's no other choice. Haha. You ever been to Baltimore bro? White folk are the minority. Question. Are you black or white? I'm curious.

How does a white person "know black people". This is getting racially charged. Don't like it.

  • Great discussion in this thread until the last 10 or so posts.

To me Tupac is the most overrated rapper of all time. He was good and getting better when he died but he never reached the top of his game. Makaveli was his best lyrical album and he would've continued to grow from there. It took him about 10 albums worth of material to reach that point while it took Biggie only 2 albums to clearly outclass him a s pure lyricist. I love the personna of Tupac and the struggle within him that he dealt with(i sincerely believe he had what people now would call a mental illness with his 2 entirely different personalities). I completely understand why he is revered(he is the prototypical modern black man) but that doesn't mean he was great as a rapper. It just means he is one of many humans that is put on a higher pedestal than their work deserves.

My top 5 pure lyricists, not rappers and influence(Rakim and Jay Z would top that list)

    1 Biggie-complete package
2 Nas-complete package with one caveat, mainstream ability. He could never crossover even though he tried. Best flow of all time
3 Rakim-ahead of his time and was just a juggernaught
4 Eminem-Only when he really wants to be though. When he's focused and really on, there has never been a better technician than him. His ability to rhyme multiple syllables within the same pattern has never been equaled. He can just do things others can't. (Take a long, hard listen to "Lose Yourself" and break the song down into the different cadences and within every one, every bar rhymes word for word with conjuctions and filler words being the only exceptions)
5 Andre 3000-as an avid Outkast fan that has listened to every album countless times, it's amazing how consistently great he's been over his career. His delivery has gotten much smoother and faster but even on their debut he was dropping gems. Atliens is the most slept on of the Outkast albums but it's really introspective and deep inside the mind of the 2. Really some deep, dark lyrics on that album from Andre. Then his opus on Aquemini. That's when people really stood up and took notice of the unreal talent he has. He was perfect on that album.

Earlier someone mentioned the greatest verse of all time and there are many great ones that I can sit back and just vibe to but imo the greatest and just knocking verse of all time is easy, Cappadonna on "Winter Warz". He murdered that record. Anyone that hasn't heard it or just don't remember, google it. Made the Don't be Menace soundtrack worth the money on it's on.

  • Everybody talking down on Pac's lyrics and calling him overrated need to stop listening to rap music, period.

Clearly, the genre isn't for you. And, his struggle wasn't the same as "the modern black man," lol. Tupac was raised by high ranking Black Panther members, his moms once was charged with more than 150 charges of conspiracy against the US.

His representation of thug life meant, him against the gov't officials/police.

  • Biggie made as big an impact on music as Pac with only 2 albums... Ready to Die is up there with the greatest albums of all time.

Nas is every rappers favorite rapper.. He has been a model of consistency, illmatic is the standard to which you judge classic works of hip hop.

Eminem is just a technician... And people related with him at an amazing level... He sold 2 million copies of the MMLP in its first week! He will never go out of style and will always have a cult following..

Of those 3 you can't really pick the best.. Once your a legend its not a question of who's the greatest. Those mentioned along with pac, wu tang, andre, jay z, big l, beastie boys, slick rick, and others won't ever be forgotten.. And could each argue as the greatest

I didn't say he was. But, pointing out lyrics isn't the way to go about it with rappers like Pac or a Chuck D.

Their rap careers were mainly platforms to get out political messages. NWA and Ice T wanted to point the finger at the police, etc.
