Is "Braves" offensive?

  • I have an idiot friend who argued with me last night that team names like the "Braves" are offensive.

IMO it's one of the dumbest arguments I have ever heard. But then I went looking on the internet to see if he is the only idiot out there and below is what I found....unbelievable....

So I ask the board its opinion...

  • There were huge sweeping attacks and changes on/to these names about 5-6 years ago and the ones that survive will basically last.

Redskins is pretty offensive and to be honest, if they could change it they would I think. Braves is fine, I mean labeling a people group with a desirable adjective is generally ok.

Soon, the only thing left with Indian names will be casinos.

  • In today's overly politically correct society, literally everything will offend someone. It's scary how thin skinned society is today. People really need to quit being pussies about every little thing.

there is nothing racist about it .

those that cry about sports nicknames/mascots are nothing more than weak-minded spastics.

most of the same group support the "only conference champs" playoff format .
which would have seen #10 Wisconsin (in 2011) make a four team (conf champ only) playoff . lol

attempting to state a case in favor of either one is nothing more than idiotic.

    What Is offensive about Blackskins?

Its a tribute to the hard working, blue collar assembly line workers who end their days with their skin covered in black brake dust.

    Right?

Zing. It hasn't been great but they have been one of the better teams in the league the past couple years, even with last year's choke job, and look great right now.

I don't think Brave is offensive. Then again, I don't find much offensive. I could see the tomahawk chop being offensive with the chant and the arm motion...it's a little much. I think the best thing for everyone to do though...is to get over themselves. There is politically correct and then there's being a pussy.

  • I can certainly see why someone could find it offensive, but to be honest, it really doesn't matter to any outside of the Native American community. If they think it is offensive, then it is offensive. And honestly, as much of the shaft as they've been given in our country's history, if they want us to find a different mascot, we should get a different mascot.

In my non-Native American opinion, I would think that if the nickname is being used as a symbol of savagery, then it could be construed as being offensive. And let's be honest, few teams with Native American nicknames picked them for their spirituality or because they threw a kick ass feast for the pilgrims.

That was the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Devil Ray is offensive? Good God. This country is full of thin skinned pansies.

That said, the name change seems to be working for them!

Who said Indians were offended? I know a guy who is Cherokee, full blooded too, that is a huge Redskins fan. True story. The only thing odd about it is that anybody would care about any NFL team, lol.

None of the names of these teams are presented in a derogatory manner...most especially the Braves. I would be willing to bet that if you were to randomly ask Indians what they think of the Braves or Indians most would either say they don't like baseball, or they would give you their opinion on how those teams will do this year. My bet is that it's mostly white liberals who are offended by the names.

  • I am not personally offended by Braves, Redskins or Seminoles but I believe very strongly that there should be no place for racial stereotypes in sports. Almost nothing is going to be offensive to me, and a large majority of any fanbase, the average white american male. Let's be honest, however, if something that is supposed to be entertaining for all, singles out any one race or group of people it just seems unnecessary for that to continue. This is different than the Washington NBA franchise changing from Bullets to Wizards (that is based on something different entirely). Ultimately this only speaks to the absolutely disgusting disrespect that the Native American population has received throughout this country's history. Yes, it might seem petty at this point to get up in arms about something...maybe the damage has already been done. But to say people are pussies because they find a NA war chant during a baseball game (where it has no business being) offensive is comical to me.

I don't see how the Chop is offensive. It's not like it's done to mock Indians. It's done as a sort of "battle cry" for the team to get the team pumped up intimidate the opposing team etc. If anything it's a compliment.

  • None of those teams names are presented in a derogatory way at all.

It is common in sports around the word to names teams after peoples who fought valiantly and succeded or even failed. Spartans, Trojans, Pirates....Indians, Braves etc.

It's not meant as disrespect, often it's a compliment. I see no difference here, but then again I am not a liberal and constantly looking for something to b**ch about.

Basing your entire argument off of one guy is stupid.

You declare tribes as sovereign nations, make treaties with them, disregard those treaties and take their land, send them walking across the continent in the winter to a place they've never lived only to take that over as well when you find oil there. Then you destroy their language and culture by forcing them to assimilate into American society and go to boarding school, change their names, and tell most of them that they aren't Native because they don't look like it. Force the ones that do look like it to have a card stating that they're Native. The women that are have their tubes tied unwillingly or unknowingly by doctors to help solve "The Indian Problem". Then tell them to get over it and that Redskins isn't racist because one guy isn't upset about it.

The United States has taken a giant dump on Indigenous Tribes since we were formed, the least we could do is not name our sports teams after them if they don't want it.

Theres a difference between Spartans, Trojans, Seminoles, and Indians, Braves, and Redskins.
