There was a fundamental shift in ideologies between the Republican and Democratic parties in America between Lincoln's time and today. That is to say the 1865 Democratic and Republican parties do not in any way, shape, or form resemble those parties, at least ideologically speaking, today. In fact, they are quite opposite from what they used to be.
So, to answer your question, at least for me is that no modern republican is somehow slighted bc of Lincoln's place in history. He ended slavery and was the impetus to passing the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments which were probably the most important in US history.

Easy on the people in the north.... I do want you all to remember,
there's no place like New York City, baby. I've been all over the country minus a few stops and there's NOTHING in the world that compares to NYC! Best of EVERYTHING. Even best place to watch a college football game...who do you like? There's a bar for your team in the Big Apple!! :)
Don't be jelly....

Nice try. They are the same parties. Gov George Wallace who stood in the door way of The University of Alabama to keep "Coloreds" from enrolling there was a Democrat. Republicans believe that a man should work for a living and earn his money to do what he/she wishes. The Democrats believe in Government telling people where to live, Housing, and limiting them in what they can buy, Welfare. You have to hand it to the Democrats though, not only have they been able to keep slavery, Welfare and Gov Housing, they also get the race they are keeping down to vote for them at the same time.

Funny thing is Lincoln never planned to abolish slavery. The South just assumed he was going to and went crazy.
Also, Alabama used to be democratic back in the day as did most of the South so thread is pointless.

Exactly. Good post. Yankees have no sense of humor and assume everybody else must also be bitter, resentful, and be suffering from penis envy as well.

Is "Lincoln" a bittersweet movie for republicans in the south?
