Is Notre Dame/Southern Cal really a rivalry?

  • I am embarrassed by southern people. Sometimes you guys act like you live in a bubble and have absolutely no clue what goes on outside of the south.

  • Nice thread. I really appreciate the banter. However USC/Notre Dame is one of the few out of conference rivalries remaining. This game has produce more heisman trophy and national championship winners than any rivalry out there. I just copied this from the Internet. Enjoy

The Notre Dame–USC football rivalry is an American college football rivalry game played by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team of the University of Notre Dame and the USC Trojans football team of the University of Southern California.
Notre Dame and USC have traditionally been counted among the elite programs in college football, with each school having won 11 national championships [1] and 7 Heisman Trophies.[2] This football rivalry, which began in 1926, is considered one of the most important rivalries in college football,[3] and is often called the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football.
Quite often, the winner of this series has gone on to win or play for the college football national title. Both schools combined have produced the most national titles (22),[1] Heisman trophy winners (14),[2] All-Americans, College Football Hall of Famers and future NFL Hall of Famers (21)[9] of any collegiate football rivalry series. The rivals account for the highest numbers of players taken in the NFL Draft of any school; USC, with 472 draftees ranks No. 1 and Notre Dame, with 469, ranks second.[10] Also of note is that ND and USC games count for five of the ten most-watched college football games in television history. The teams play for the Jeweled Shillelagh, a trophy that goes home with the winning team each year. Notre Dame currently leads the series 43-35-5.[11]

Auburn and Alabama are separated by 9-10 games dumb ass. USC and Clemson are more like 30.

Alabama leads Auburn by 11 and a half games...40-29-1..double dumb ass. It will most likely go to 12 and a half after this weekend.

Clemson leads South Carolina by 22. 61-39-4

  • You just confirmed what I thought, you are a blinder wearing Alabama fan who thinks college football consists of Alabama and whoever they are playing that game.

There have been several great posts here trying to open your eyes but I'm afraid they were in vain.

I do like the "most people in LA don't care about USC let alone ND" Just because all 91,605 people in college town Tuscaloosa bleed Crimson it doesn't stand to reason that all 10 million people in greater Los Angeles would care about USC. I'd say at least 35% of the population has an interest in the outcome of the game one way or another.

    Do the math.

  • So a rivalry cannot be handled with respect?

ND/USC rivalry is full of competitive emotion and gloating to the losing team - but just because ND/USC fans do not upper deck each others toilets or poison trees does not discount it as a rivalry.

We handle it in a civilized manner.

Leppy I have always been very well received at Notre Dame and going to games there is always a special occasion for my family and I.

Good luck and a good game for all of us Saturday.

Thats kind of what I am getting at. It is a great series, but its not as if Notre Dame fans encounter a lot of So Cal fans on a daily basis. Alabama fans deal with Auburn every day, Same with Oregon/Oregon St, Ohio St/Michigan, Michigan/Michigan St, UF/FSU, etc.

Its a great series, but not a "rivalry".

ND fans encounter a lot of Mich fans and Mich St fans but that does not mean they are bigger rivalries.

BTW, ND fans are all over the nation...not just in and around South Bend.

The two fanbases just don't encounter/interact with one another on a daily basis. This banter is an essential part of a rivalry.

I have been to the Coliseum 3 times and have been treated with respect and great hospitality.

Biggest challenge of the year for ND for sure - looking forward to a great battle. Everyone keeps talking about the QB - I am more worried about USC's backfield.

It will be the highest rated game of the year

Pro sports are different and by nature are more nationally followed. I know dozens of Lakers and Celtics fans in South Carolina. I know exactly 1 So Cal fan and 2 Notre Dame fans.

  • Question for the Notre Dame fans on the board. How many So Cal fans do you interact with regularly? If you were to lose this Saturday, how much crap will you get about it from your coworkers/Facebook friends for the next couple of weeks? Vice versa for the So Cal fans on the board.

You really don't get it..do you? Do you think that every damn rivalry has to mimmick what you think it should be??? Oh, this rivalry is heated, competitive...and maybe something you have no clue about....respectful. That is why it means so much..no other win is more meaningful to each of us.

As stated in this thread..a rivalry is as important, as valuable as the participants feel it is, and no one can judge or understand how relevant, strong and enduring except the rivals themselves.

For me, my dad went to SC and I was born a Trojan fan.

Most older Bama fans it has more to do with 1966 and 1977.

Not sure why anyone under 25 or 30 would really care.

Right...and the TV deals Notre Dame has earned all on their own, is because there are no fans out there watching the Irish play....dumb ass NBC, ND is their charity case.

I know 6 die hard SC fans and have some old military buddies who reside on the left coast who root for SC.

The 6 I know have already congratulated me on the Irish's season. They all want to win bad - not to embarrass ND, but to get some respect back for this season and get a good bowl game as they have not been to one in a couple of years.

The razzing is great, but never personal. I know their wives and their kids. All great dudes - but if ND loses - I buy the rounds. An they have bragging rights for the year.

Don't get me wrong. Its a great series. Multiple national titles and Heismans. Many years with national title implications. Very high profile. I get all that.

But if Notre Dame wins Saturday, how many Southern Call fans really care? Sure you hate to lose and you always want to beat a great team. But does the So Cal fan have to go into work Monday and be subjected to trash talk all day from ND fans? Does he get constant reminders of it for the next 364 days? Does he have to see Notre Dame fans walking around with T shirts about the game? Does he get on Facebook and see his news feed flooded with people making fun of So Cal? Is there constant trash talk every other week of the year? Does he follow ND sports regularly for the sole purpose of being able to talk trash about them?

My guess is no. Notre Dame/So Cal is a HUGE game and will always draw big TV numbers. But at the end of the day, the outcome of the game doesn't affect the daily lives of the fans, and for that reason it will never truly be a "rivalry"

Ohhhh I see why you're salty.

Clemson scar didn't get gameday :(

Yeah, you live in South Carolina I'm guessing? Do you know how many ND grads live in LA?

I live in Honolulu and have 3 ND grads that I work with.

If anyone were to call the intensity of the rivalry, it would be us, as we have UCLA a few miles away, and consider ND just as big of a rivalry.
