Is Notre Dame/Southern Cal really a rivalry?

  • joetheogre said...

Question for the Notre Dame fans on the board. How many So Cal fans do you interact with regularly? If you were to lose this Saturday, how much crap will you get about it from your coworkers/Facebook friends for the next couple of weeks? Vice versa for the So Cal fans on the board.

That rivalry is more the USC-ucla rivalry being in the same city. The USC-ND rivalry is less about giving each other crap than having the satisfaction of knowing you were the better team that year. It's intense on and off the field but it is perhaps the most gentlemanly rivalry outside the service academies.

He actually makes some great points. USC fans, if they lose, go on about their lives as if nothing happened. They don't live, work, hang out with a bunch of ND fans. Hell, I bet most ND fans have never encountered a real USC fan in person. Their campuses are on separate sides of the country. Nah, not a real rivalry.

If we lose Saturday, I'll have to skip Thanksgiving and probably Christmas as my mom's side of the family are all AU fans. I won't be able to get on any social media. Going to dinner/bars will probably be out for a while. Work will suck. Bama fans will never, ever hear the end of it.

    Thankfully, it isn't happening.

Obviously you don't know shit about life outside of Alabama, sorry. ND has one of the largest alumni bases in LA I do believe..

I think the fact that its a rivalry that survives and thrives despite the 2000 mile distance between schools is proof that its MORE of a real rivalry than the one sided South Carolina/Clemson or Alabama/Auburn borefests that some people on the board talk up so much.

Its interesting that Southern California considers Notre Dame to be their chief rival, despite UCLA being right there in town, and Notre Dame considers Southern Cal to be its chief rival, despite Michigan and Michigan State almost always being on their schedule. When it came time for Notre Dame to knock a team off the schedule, it was Michigan, not USC that got the boot.

There are very few actual rivalries between all time top true blue bloods. You have Texas and Oklahoma.....and USC and Notre Dame. And thats it.

Florida and Florida State is close, except they were both terrible for the majority of their time as rivals. Alabama and Auburn is close, except Auburn is just not an elite all time program.

What else is out there that yearly pits two top tier programs and could be considered a real rivalry?

This post is asinine and I can't take it seriously. Ohio State and Michigan are both in the top 5 for all time wins. You don't get more blue blood than that.

Pro sports are different and by nature are more nationally followed. I know dozens of Lakers and Celtics fans in South Carolina. I know exactly 1 So Cal fan and 2 Notre Dame fans.

You can't be serious with pro sports being different... ND is like the fricking C'Boys. I grew up in CA and knew probably 3 people that actually went to ND - but I knew/know unlimited numbers of their fans. Especially if you went to a Catholic HS - automatic ND fan for life.

In my experience fans of ND or SC of my parents generation hate each other with a passion. All this mutual respect that keeps getting waived about, especially by some of the older types ITT, I never, ever saw growing up.

Why you're not seeing it is probably because of your age, where you live, and ND has been shit sando for so long it's kind of muted its impact.

Cal-Stanford is a great, great rivalry but it would be meaningless (and laughable) to anyone who wasn't an alumni or lived in the Bay Area. SC-ND though... There is so much history of mutual success, mutual disdain, and so many games over years and years where so much was riding on the outcome... That's the definition of epic rivalry.

Why do so many people hate ND if they do not know any fans?

I hate them because they are plugged on Sportscenter/ESPN way too much. This year I have no problem with it because they are good, but when they were going 6-6 it was annoying to hear them talked about so much.

Yet they are the most hated team in America. Without "living next door" to to each other. How can that be? According to you a rivalry is not a rivalry unless the two fanbases can harass each other at work, etc. You hate ND yet claim you only know 2 or 3 fans. There can be plenty of passion on both sides without working together, etc. Of course, as the poster above stated, there are plenty of ND fans in Southern California.

  • To put it in perspective...the 2003/2004/2005 teams received a lot of accolades from the various sports publications like SI, SN, ESPN - "Program of the Decade", "Player of the Decade", etc. Our boys were interviewed, Leinart, Steve Smith, RB, LenDale White, Ryan Kalil, Sam Baker..defensive guys..all said that of all those games - including the NCs, no other win in that 37-2 legacy, no win meant more than USC/Notre Dame 2005.

"The Comeback", 4th&9" and so many other references to those great rivalry games are known and valued by every true Trojan alum/fan, and the stories told over and over.

People that blindly hate Notre Dame (non rival), hate the true power the university holds..unmatched - much less achieved by a tiny private school in the middle of nowhere. lol

The history of the Jeweled Shillelagh:

"The trophy was originally presented in 1952 by the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Los Angeles, stating that "this shillelagh will serve to symbolize in part the high tradition, the keen rivalry and above all the sincere respect which these two great universities have for each other."

There are tons of Notre Dame alumni in Southern California..and fans in every Catholic school (and there are a lot!) in the state.

This Friday, both alums/fanbases will gather at the Bonaventure Hotel for our traditional, joint scholarship fundraiser. The proceeds are split between the schools, we sit side by side - Trojans and Irish, toasting the rivalry and listening to our former players and coaches talk about their experiences in the rivalry. Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott..it goes on and on.

A rivalry is as big as a fan wants to make it. I love the Iron Bowl, but as a Bama fan, I prefer the 3rd Saturday in October. This whole telling people their rivalry isn't real is real stupid. How would you know if you're not involved?

ND/USC is a huge game for both schools and yes, there are more ND fans in So Cal than people think as well. I think the UCLA game for most Trojan fans is a tougher one to lose based off location as well, but not a bigger win.

I've been to some others that would surprise people as well. You think people in Alabama, Oregon, or South Carolina have little to do in the Fall outside of football? Try Mississippi. The freaking Egg Bowl is insane. Think about it. More than half of their existance, neither of these teams have had anything except one game to play for all year. Game means nothing, except to those involved.

Had to take time and give this a +1. From what I have read, you are easily one of the more level headed, rationale, informed and objective posters on this board. Well done sir.

  • The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is the largest in the country. The bi-annual luncheon hosted by the ND Club of LA is always a standing room only sellout! The game itself is almost always a sellout.

I guess you have to be old enough to appreciate this game for what it was, what it is and what it will always be. It is the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football. Between the two schools there are 22 National Championships and 14 Heisman winners.

If you watch this game and don't understand the impact it had on what college football has become, you don't know jack shit about college football.

It is one of my favorite games to watch and on the bucket list of games I hope to attend. I only wish Keith Jackson was calling the game.

So yes, dumbass, this is as real as any rivalry gets and takes second place to none.

Ahhh, I could be his mama. There was an ESPN National Board, far superior to this one..with truly knowledgeable CFB fans from many of the big programs.

Georgia Boy was one..you had to respect his wide ranging knowledge, dignity and respect for the game. BeBucks was also one of the members, and we welcome his big 'ol Buckeye self at our tailgates and he sits with all the die-hard Trojan crazies. We all made some valuable friends from that board.

Don't get me wrong. Its a great series. Multiple national titles and Heismans. Many years with national title implications. Very high profile. I get all that.

But if Notre Dame wins Saturday, how many Southern Call fans really care? Sure you hate to lose and you always want to beat a great team. But does the So Cal fan have to go into work Monday and be subjected to trash talk all day from ND fans? Does he get constant reminders of it for the next 364 days? Does he have to see Notre Dame fans walking around with T shirts about the game? Does he get on Facebook and see his news feed flooded with people making fun of So Cal? Is there constant trash talk every other week of the year? Does he follow ND sports regularly for the sole purpose of being able to talk trash about them?

My guess is no. Notre Dame/So Cal is a HUGE game and will always draw big TV numbers. But at the end of the day, the outcome of the game doesn't affect the daily lives of the fans, and for that reason it will never truly be a "rivalry"

Wahhhhh - guy at work talks shit about my team losing. Must be such an intense rivalry! I really hate losing to Montana State! Go Grizzlies!

Dude, there's tons of rivalries where the proximity of the teams/programs causes daily interactions with the teams' fans. You really think Louisville-Kentucky is "really a rivalry" in college football? Nobody gives a flying F.

Also, clearly rivalries did not exist until your friends rooting for the other team could talk shit to you by posting on your Facebook. That's such intense rivalry shittalk! ZOMG!

(Also, the guy who pointed out the Lakers-Celtics rivalry gave a great example. Why is it a rivalry? Because those teams have gone up against each other for the title so many times. It's the same deal with USC-ND and college football, except then you add Heisman Trophies, etc.)

And now that I mention it, now I understand why Bama fans are so butthurt about the USC-ND rivalry. All those years and 1 Heisman trophy winner. You mad bro? Go burn some historic trees. Because you know, you're such awesome rivals that that will epitomize how awesome your rivalry is.

*EDIT* Just saw a post where OP said he's not a Bama fan. Ok. My bad. Bama comment still stands, but just isn't directed to you.
