Question for the Notre Dame fans on the board. How many So Cal fans do you interact with regularly? If you were to lose this Saturday, how much crap will you get about it from your coworkers/Facebook friends for the next couple of weeks? Vice versa for the So Cal fans on the board.

He actually makes some great points. USC fans, if they lose, go on about their lives as if nothing happened. They don't live, work, hang out with a bunch of ND fans. Hell, I bet most ND fans have never encountered a real USC fan in person. Their campuses are on separate sides of the country. Nah, not a real rivalry.
If we lose Saturday, I'll have to skip Thanksgiving and probably Christmas as my mom's side of the family are all AU fans. I won't be able to get on any social media. Going to dinner/bars will probably be out for a while. Work will suck. Bama fans will never, ever hear the end of it.
Thankfully, it isn't happening.

I think the fact that its a rivalry that survives and thrives despite the 2000 mile distance between schools is proof that its MORE of a real rivalry than the one sided South Carolina/Clemson or Alabama/Auburn borefests that some people on the board talk up so much.
Its interesting that Southern California considers Notre Dame to be their chief rival, despite UCLA being right there in town, and Notre Dame considers Southern Cal to be its chief rival, despite Michigan and Michigan State almost always being on their schedule. When it came time for Notre Dame to knock a team off the schedule, it was Michigan, not USC that got the boot.

There are very few actual rivalries between all time top true blue bloods. You have Texas and Oklahoma.....and USC and Notre Dame. And thats it.
Florida and Florida State is close, except they were both terrible for the majority of their time as rivals. Alabama and Auburn is close, except Auburn is just not an elite all time program.
What else is out there that yearly pits two top tier programs and could be considered a real rivalry?

Yet they are the most hated team in America. Without "living next door" to to each other. How can that be? According to you a rivalry is not a rivalry unless the two fanbases can harass each other at work, etc. You hate ND yet claim you only know 2 or 3 fans. There can be plenty of passion on both sides without working together, etc. Of course, as the poster above stated, there are plenty of ND fans in Southern California.

A rivalry is as big as a fan wants to make it. I love the Iron Bowl, but as a Bama fan, I prefer the 3rd Saturday in October. This whole telling people their rivalry isn't real is real stupid. How would you know if you're not involved?
ND/USC is a huge game for both schools and yes, there are more ND fans in So Cal than people think as well. I think the UCLA game for most Trojan fans is a tougher one to lose based off location as well, but not a bigger win.
I've been to some others that would surprise people as well. You think people in Alabama, Oregon, or South Carolina have little to do in the Fall outside of football? Try Mississippi. The freaking Egg Bowl is insane. Think about it. More than half of their existance, neither of these teams have had anything except one game to play for all year. Game means nothing, except to those involved.

This post is asinine and I can't take it seriously. Ohio State and Michigan are both in the top 5 for all time wins. You don't get more blue blood than that.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is the largest in the country. The bi-annual luncheon hosted by the ND Club of LA is always a standing room only sellout! The game itself is almost always a sellout.
I guess you have to be old enough to appreciate this game for what it was, what it is and what it will always be. It is the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football. Between the two schools there are 22 National Championships and 14 Heisman winners.
If you watch this game and don't understand the impact it had on what college football has become, you don't know jack shit about college football.
It is one of my favorite games to watch and on the bucket list of games I hope to attend. I only wish Keith Jackson was calling the game.
So yes, dumbass, this is as real as any rivalry gets and takes second place to none.

Don't get me wrong. Its a great series. Multiple national titles and Heismans. Many years with national title implications. Very high profile. I get all that.
But if Notre Dame wins Saturday, how many Southern Call fans really care? Sure you hate to lose and you always want to beat a great team. But does the So Cal fan have to go into work Monday and be subjected to trash talk all day from ND fans? Does he get constant reminders of it for the next 364 days? Does he have to see Notre Dame fans walking around with T shirts about the game? Does he get on Facebook and see his news feed flooded with people making fun of So Cal? Is there constant trash talk every other week of the year? Does he follow ND sports regularly for the sole purpose of being able to talk trash about them?
My guess is no. Notre Dame/So Cal is a HUGE game and will always draw big TV numbers. But at the end of the day, the outcome of the game doesn't affect the daily lives of the fans, and for that reason it will never truly be a "rivalry"

Is Notre Dame/Southern Cal really a rivalry?
