Is Notre Dame/Southern Cal really a rivalry?

I know 6 die hard SC fans and have some old military buddies who reside on the left coast who root for SC.

The 6 I know have already congratulated me on the Irish's season. They all want to win bad - not to embarrass ND, but to get some respect back for this season and get a good bowl game as they have not been to one in a couple of years.

The razzing is great, but never personal. I know their wives and their kids. All great dudes - but if ND loses - I buy the rounds. An they have bragging rights for the year.

    6 is very few.

I know 100-200 Clemson fans. I know probably double the number of South Carolina fans. Of all of my friends, I would say about 80-90 percent have an allegiance one way or the other.

Our rivalry is rarely if ever significant nationally, but the hatred is there and people have this game circled on their calender all year.

This post is asinine and I can't take it seriously. Ohio State and Michigan are both in the top 5 for all time wins. You don't get more blue blood than that.

Sorry...forgot about Ohio State, Michigan. Yep pure blue blood. I must have forgotten because Ohio State is on probation, so I am forbidden to vote for them in anything.

  • Speaking as a Trojan the ND/USC rivalry is VERY real. Our two primary rivalries go something like this:

We hope UCLA loses every game they play and then loses to us - we just want them to fail at everything they do because we have no respect for their TERRIBLE culture and their type of mediocrity (sans our terrible season this year) should never be rewarded.

We hope ND wins every game they play and then loses to us - we respect them as a school and a football program and want them to do well so the rivalry remains great. When we play ND we want to smash and embarrass a great opponent.

In short, UCLA is an annoyance to be dealt with. Notre Dame is an opportunity to conquer a great rival.

Cry Havoc; and let slip the dogs of war!

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is the largest in the country. The bi-annual luncheon hosted by the ND Club of LA is always a standing room only sellout! The game itself is almost always a sellout.

I guess you have to be old enough to appreciate this game for what it was, what it is and what it will always be. It is the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football. Between the two schools there are 22 National Championships and 14 Heisman winners.

If you watch this game and don't understand the impact it had on what college football has become, you don't know jack shit about college football.

It is one of my favorite games to watch and on the bucket list of games I hope to attend. I only wish Keith Jackson was calling the game.

So yes, dumbass, this is as real as any rivalry gets and takes second place to none.

Almost always a sell out. Tells me all I need to know about this "great" rivalry these two fanbases care so much about. LA has a billion people and they don't sell out many of their games at USC, including the ND game.

The level of passion and intensity does not approach that of the Iron Bowl and our games (especially lately) have meant a lot on the national scale. Thus, the Iron Bowl is a better rivalry. Hell, outside of this year and a few between 03-05 when has the USC-ND meant anything to the national title race the last 20-25 years? ND has blown much of the past 20 years and USC was extremely medicore in the 90's.

Look, I appreciate the two programs for what they are (or what they used to be in ND's case, this year they're a paper tiger). The titles, Heismans, tradition...all great. The rivalry itself is more of a celebration of all that than a heated rivalry as compared to others. I think it's more Masters or Wimbledon than a great rivalry.

I have been Trojanized by the long shapely legs, beautiful smile and brilliant mind of a USC educated woman.

But still, I can close my eyes and hear "Conquest" playing in the background while Keith Jackson gives the play by play. No one game influenced my love of college football more than this one.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if more people tuned into the USC/Notre Dame game than tuned into the National Championship game between Alabama and LSU...even though USC is unranked.

Game Day will show up to a stadium where the fans couldn't care less about their show...sell out crowd that places more importance on tailgating and socializing than standing around with stupid signs to be seen on TV. We have that every day if we want....ESPN WC headquarters is just down the street...

I live in State College PA about 2 miles from Beaver Stadium at PSU. Knowing 6 USC fans (3 grads) in the heart of Nittany lion Territory is a decent amount.

God, some of these people are absolutely clueless..I don't know one Gator fan/alum, Alabama fan/alum, LSU fan/alum, Tennessee fan/alum out here, not one. Lots of Domers, Buckeyes, Wolverines, Texas (the real Texas school), Oklahoma, etc are well represented...few SEC fans.

Are you coming out for the game Leppy? If so, pm me..you're welcome to our tailgate.

Here's to a great injury free game!

  • I think one indication of whether it's a rivalry occurred last night at my house.

My daughter's friend (huge Notre Dame fan) skyped her from Afghanistan where he had just gotten back in from a weeks rotation on patrol and he insisted she get me to talk about the game. This guy has been humping around that shit hole for a week and all he wanted to do was talk USC-ND football.

There were several other soldiers in the background either yelling "Fight On" or "Go Irish". Yeah it's no rivalry.

I wish I could - truly appreciate the offer. Would be a lot of fun.

These guys from the south struggle with the concept that College Football has existed for over 130 years or more. The average SEC fan seems to think it started 5 years ago.

USC and ND travelled via Train to meet each other on the field back in the 1920's when Knute Rockne and Gwynn Wison helped put college football into the national spotlight as it was odd for a team in the mid west to travel to California for regular season games.

I am jealous that I cannot experience the atmosphere at the coliseum Sat night.

    Have a blast

Your program has never been relevant...don't worry, your fellow SEC honks will jump on to say you're a good program simply because you beat their only blue blood.

A program that was a dumpster fire in the BIG-12, all of a sudden is a powerhouse in the SEC? You can be proud of your perversion for jizzjars, and wacko-sicko, testicle grabbing, psuedo-military rituals....lol
