It being taken place in another world in another time is a different story, I don't see how it's not.

Yep you're trolling. No one is this stupid.

stop. please stop. you are digging yourself a hole. Avatar being mentioned as a top 5 movie is hysterical all in its own. You adding reasons why its not the same story line as pocahontas and dances with wolves is just down right stupid. Have you even seen dances with wolves? I understand pocahontas came out well before you were born.

Allow me to be a bit crass for explanation purposes.

Say I banged your mom in a theatre.

And then I banged her in the back of a Volkswagen.

About the only thing that is "different" about the actual "story" is that one place was more comfortable than the other.

But the point remains that the real story is, I banged your mom.

    Get it now?

  • Dances with Wolves was just a rehash of Pocahontas. Terrible.

  • Knew a girl in college whose online screenname was Pocahontas. She had a nice big ole latina booty. So we called her Poke-a-hot-ass. She liked it.

    True story.

  • Depends on where he goes with the franchise. The first film was OK as a first in a series. It basically was a movie that setup the mythology and characters. I don't see it as a singular great film because it didn't explore anything other films hadn't, it just explored them in a different environment which at some points was very boring. If it had been a first book in a series of books... A lot of people wouldn't read the 2nd... The visuals is what made it "Exciting" and will probably bring a lot of the audience back. But if you were looking for depth in the story.. It simply wasn't there.

  • Honestly, Avatar 3D was one of the coolest "Theater Experiences" I have ever had. The 3D was dope as hell. The story was very predictable and the fact that the mudder fugging mineral was called UNOBTAINIUM was lazy.

Overall though, I can look past the storyline because the visual experience was more akin to a ride at an amusement park ride than a cinema piece.

Sometimes I feel like people read a review somewhere and never watched it in 3D. Then they regurgitate the review on the internet. At best, they watched it on Blu-ray. I can't even watch it on regular TV and I actually liked it in the theaters.

Those of you that didn't go see it in 3D really missed a cool experience. Of course, not everyone would like it though.

But I dont think that visual style will be as impressive now. I saw it in IMAX 3d and it was great. But if you take away the visuals Avatar is garbage. They better have some good screenplays in the holster, because they will not be able to survive on presentation alone.

Agreed. Avatar without the visuals is a failure.

Cameron must keep breaking ground with the 3D technology to be successful, imo.

  • Avatar sold cause of its innovative visuals, not because of the story. It was entertaining enough as far as I'm concerned, but by no means would I consider it a top movie. There is no way it stands up well in a home environment like it did in a theater.

  • Godfather
    Shawshank Redemption
    Saving Private Ryan
    Pulp Fiction
    Original Star Wars movies

Going back to some older stuff:
Some of the Alfred Hitchcock movies like Psycho and Rear Window
    Citizen Kane

Just a small list of things I can think of off the top of my head that I would put above Avatar.

Sure the technology and effects of Avatar were wonderful, but just about everything else was meh. Normally I don't like the Academy Awards, but take a look at what it was nominated for and what it won:
    Best Picture
    Best Director
    Best Art Direction - Won
    Best Cinematography - Won
    Best Film Editing
    Best Original Score
    Best Sound Editing
    Best Sound
    Best Visual Effects - Won

Notice how nothing about the actors or script were nominated and I have the feeling it got nominated for Best Director based off of James Cameron's past, and Best Picture because it made so much money.

I am probably the most anti 3-D person on the planet so I guess I just didn't get it.

I watched it in theaters and then watched it on blu ray and thought it was far better without the 3-D making blurry.
