The head coach of the football team helped to cover up the rape of a child that happened in his locker room.... How does that have nothing to do with the football program?

  • Smoking Gun indeed. NCAA will not get involved and should not get involved. LoL at Buckeyes seem to be the most clamoring for LOIC. I guess they need more recruits to pick off the PSU carcass for 2012. Any good OL they can snag?

    lack of control

Lack of control that had NOTHING to do with the football players or team itself. Its a criminal matter, not NCAA. The NCAA will obviously look into it, but this had nothing to do with sports. It had to do with a dirty old man, and 3 other dirty old men covering for him. There is no reason to punish the players or fans when it had nothing to do with the football program.

OSU fans are demanding LOIC. I just don't see it.

Well a kid was raped in the FOOTBALL facilities... And apparently the FOOTBALL coach played a role in hushing this whole thing.... Oh and the guy who raped the kid was an ex FOOTBALL coach.

None of that helped the football program though. This isn't an NCAA issue and I don't understand why so many people want PSU's football program to be punished so badly. Everyone who was involved is gone, why would you want the current coaching staff, current players, alumni and students to suffer? Four men including Joe Pa made horrible decisions and should pay for those actions.

So what does an agent paying a player have to do with a university or a football team? Coach is just as much a part of a team as a player.

    Bruce Feldman covers it well:

They were not in control of events going on inside the AD.

It happened on the school's dime.

Are you really so obtuse that you can't see that it was a graduate assistant who told the head football coach, who then in turn told the AD, and on up the chain to the president of the university? The reason they never threw Jerry under the bus was the fact that it would be very damaging to the reputation of the football program if the truth had come out. Well guess what, the cat's out of the bag now! If these guys covered up child rape, you don't think they'll cover up player NCAA infractions? There are stories about Jerry pimping kids to booster's and you don't think after all this it constitutes lack of institutional control with a AD and president who covered up countless child rape and sexual molestation charges?

I dont think that the football program should be punished.... Certainly not the players or fans...

But to say this had nothing to do with the football program is just stupid.... The football program is why this was covered up. Protecting the business.

Anyway, i agree that the ncaa should just stay away at this point but LOIC seems clear here.... "institution" goes beyond players and X's and o's

Fair enough, but you didn't make that ruling and they did. I'd like to see some consistency out of them, especially given their mission statement talking about fostering a better environment for the community.

Again I'll ask the question, how bad would it really have been for the football program if in 1998 or in 2001 when allegations about Sandusky came out if PSU reported it to the cops and he was arrested?

Oh, and Pete Carroll kind of left town before sanctions.... Does that mean they should not be hit with the charges because he is no longer there?

Totally agree. I've said from day one that Joe Pa and all those involved messed up and should have done more. If they would have just went to the cops when they first found out everything would have been fine.

    Bruce Feldman covers it well:

Paying players is cheating, a violation of NCAA rules. Committing crimes, and/or conspiring to cover them up, as heinous as those activities were, is not cheating at football.

It really is a shame first & foremost for the victims. But fans & alumni of PSU don't deserve this imo & neither does the university itself. The leadership failed big time.

Its unbelievable what they did. This is such a simple thing, I don't understand how men who were put in charge of a major university could be so stupid. They decided it would be better to protect a sick monster than to protect the victims and a great university.

  • okay, okay, okay

debating on the possibility of the NCAA getting involved is a crap shoot at best.

the NCAA probably doesn't even know if it will get involved... plus, the NCAA really isn't known for its own adherence to its own rules, so who knows?

what we DO know is that jopa is a creep

for this, i say we exhume the body and let it rot in a sewage treatment plant.

Apparently you don't see rape as potentially damaging to ones reputation as an upstanding school with competent faculty! You don't think if this had come out in 2001 that it wouldn't have been a huge story? Ask a Buckeye fan about how things work out when you cover shit up! JoPa ran a mafia style campus where he was above reproach! If you can't see that you are blind. Your defensive coordinator raped young boys? Don't you give a shit that your head coach covered that up? You really think if it wasn't damaging that the whole administration wouldn't have tried to cover it up. Do you have children? There is no actual way to determine the answer to your question because of the fact that your administration failed as human's to do the right thing!

You need to calm down. Every PSU fan in this thread has said how bad this is, and how JoePa is a monster.

He was asking how bad FOR THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM. You know, since this had nothing to do with the football players or gaining an advantage like paying players does.

Its honestly kind of weird how OSU fans are handling this. They REALLY want that recruiting bump, so they are literally begging the NCAA to jump into something that was a criminal matter, and non sports related.
