I didn't think they would hire a great Coach, but JLS? Wow.
I do think it's smart hiring an interim right now over a full time replacement though. They would have settled for someone not great, and now they can get it right in November next year.

I think about this like OSU's coaching search... except JLS won't be in contention for a permanent position like Fickell was. This is a stop-gap measure until they get another guy.

It's a better move than trying to name a permanent head coach this late in the game. You might as well name an interim that's somewhat familiar with your system and take your lumps this year while starting the permanent HC search a lot earlier than anyone else. They would have taken lumps this year anyway if they hired a permanent HC that had to implement an entirely new system in the fall.

Wow. I wish JLS the best and I hope he succeeds. He's a nice guy but he failed pretty badly at MSU. Exciting offense but terrible defense. If he can get someone to just take over the defense 100%, then I think he can have a successful run.
