It said "My professor just posted one of my grades, daddy! I made an A in Geography!!!"

I don't know how to respond. It's geography. An A is a 90. I get 90% of the geography questions right at bar trivia every Tuesday and I didn't spend countless hours and thousands of my dad's money to learn that crap. I hate being patronizing but I kind of want to show appreciation too. How would you respond?

1That's cool that she calls more than one guy "daddy!!!!". Little weird that it's me and Ichabod though...

But, but...when I got an A in that class you said you 'appreciated' it, but suggested I drop the class because it was a waste and said the A wasn't impressive anyway.

You're kind of sending mixed messages now. Am I good enough? And is that required class all that important to actually obtaining a degree? See, now I'm confused. I thought I would never amount to anything anyway, getting a boyfriend seemed like the logical response.

    What else would you expect?!

  • In case OP is not trolling...

You tell her she did a great job and you're proud of her. Duh.

If you're really concerned about paying for waste classes, take some time with her to talk about her major, what her core requirements are, etc. Don't bitch about it if you aren't involved. If she's choosing classes to fill credit hours or because she was told they are easy, talk to her, tell her she can pay for that garbage. If there's an explanation, suck it up.

Would love to know how many dance recitals/activities/etc. you attended, and how many nights you've been up with her crying- either as a baby or a teenager.

I get 90% of the geography questions right at bar trivia every Tuesday and I didn't spend countless hours and thousands of my dad's money to learn that crap. I hate being patronizing but I kind of want to show appreciation too. How would you respond?

    Let's start from the top:
    1. Since you are posting this topic on a message board, you might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. As such, you should be proud that your daughter overcame half of her obviously slack gene pool to even get in college. The fact of this matter and that she got an A should please you to no end (i.e. there is hope for HER). I hope she continues to follow in her mom's footsteps.
    2. As this is your daughter and you are perplexed by how you should respond, it is a safe assumption that Father's Day is that one day per year where you see your daughter and she may actually say she loves you. Congrats on your big day. You should always share in your daughter's successes (regardless of how big or small) and be there for her during failures, but--again--if you are having to come to a message board for fathering advice, I'd say the ship has already left the harbor for you.
    3. It is my sincere hope that you are a better "uncle" than you are a father.
    4. "Thousand's of my dad's money": A.) This is a tax credit for you. B.) If you feel this were not an investment in your daughter, then you are just as ignorant (as you feel she is for her "A" in geography) for letting her attend a school with no possibility of getting a return on that investment. C) It does sound like you have some remorse from your (big assumption here) college years.
    5. Consider this a learning opportunity.

Wow. You managed to cram no less than 8 incorrect assumptions into 5 bullet points. That's pretty impressive.
