Saban is sleazy. That is all there is to it. He says it's business but we are talking about 18 year old kids here. Saban signs them to 1 year scholarships so he can drop them when he oversigns. I'm proud that Coach Chizik is not like that. He don't discard kids because they are injured nor if they have cancer. Shon Coleman had cancer when he signed and Coach Chizik honored his scholarship. He is still on scholarship and will be until he graduates even if he never plays a down of football. It is the right thing to do. All recruits that sign with Auburn now get 4 year scholarships and become part of the family. I am thankful that this kid had good guidance and will be in a better place. I feel sorry for the kids that get sucked into Saban's process.

I find it weird your more worried about an 18 year old selecting a college than one going in to the infantry.

So are you the new grayshirt/oversign thread guy?

You realize its devidee's turf? He wont be happy

Life's not fair, and this is a business...the sooner kids realize that the better off they'll be.

devidee is too busy dancing on eggshells, since Urbs told him he was going to have to run some guys out.

What if he was diagnosed with cancer before he signed? Would it be "unfair to ask the kid to get healthy before you bring him on campus"? Coach Chizik brought Shon Coleman on campus with a scholarship. He didn't have to but that is the difference in Coach Chizik and Saban. Coach Chizik cares about his players even if they haven't signed yet. He wasn't concerned about when Shon Coleman would be able to contribute. Shon was committed to Auburn University and Coach Chizik stuck with him and did the right thing.

Saban didn't care about this kid that had been committed to the University of Alabama for almost a year. The reason wasn't all about the knee injury. He just wanted to dump the kid so he could make room for the kids that would be oversigned. Saban wasn't concerned with the kid not starting school for a year. Saban will never consider doing the right thing if it doesn't benefit him. I hope Saban gets everything he deserves. Saban is the face of the University of Alabama. Thank God that it is not my beloved university.

If the kid is diagnosed with cancer, you put him on a medical scholarship and let him sort out his life threatening disease before he starts worrying about playing football, end of story. Life > football

Let me make this very clear, I don't know exactly what happened, none of us do. If we cut the kid loose, I don't believe that was the ethical thing to do. If he was asked to get healthy before he shows up on campus, as long as he receives four years of paid education (note I dont say four years of football scholarships), I'm fine with it because that is all that I believe is promised or implied when you sign an LOI.

Do all of you realize how many kids at how many programs have been completely dropped due to major knee injuries in the past or are you really naive enough to think that this is a new phenomenon? Go talk to some former BCS players about what it really means to play big time football and then come back and talk to me about Bama. If we dont like it, great, lets change the rules.

I think this board is designed to discuss college recruiting/selection, so I don't think it's weird that it would be discussed here.

you can't reason with a guy like that...'he's 'all in' 'family'...very cult like...it's tearing him up...he's probably a football fan and he chose to go to aub in the 60's...so in his life he's witnessed big brother win 9 major poll era titles...61,64,65,73,78,79,92,2009,2011. that eats him up.

  • I think this is the reason the Coaches should not push their commits not to take visits to other schools. I understand the greyshirt rule and i'm fine with it, but if a kid is committed to a school and his coach asks him not to take any other visits and then pulls out the grey shirt card then that is shady. If you ask a kid to keep his grades up, stay out of trouble, and not take any visits and he does this, you should honor your part of the deal.

    LOL

Saban wasn't willing to let him sign scholarship papers because he needed to take care of his oversigning situation -NOT because of the injured knee.

Correct -Shon Coleman delayed entering Auburn because of his medical condition - NOT becasue Coach Chizik asked him to.

Shon Coleman signed his scholarship papers and got on medical hardship. Coach Chizik didn't have to let him sign the scholarship papers but he did the right thing. He doesn't oversign and dump his commits.

So it was just a coincidence that the only two players asked to grayshirt were the two coming off of knee surgeries? Are you claiming that our staff had Caleb Gulledge rated ahead of Philon? Really?

When did CNS ever not let a kid have a scholarship because of a medical issue? Name one.

We've signed NUMEROUS players in the last 3 classes coming off of knee surgeries. All of them are still on our roster. Both of our commitments with knee injuries/surgeries were asked to grayshirt. They didn't have their offers pulled and they didn't get "cut," as an AU beat writer said on the radio this morning, or "dumped" as you want to claim. We have been grayshirting ever since 2004 and there has yet to be a single player that hasn't had their scholarship honored afterwards, despite what you want to claim. If there has, name him.

Earlier this year the AU fans were crying about Saban overusing the medical hardship waiver, but now you're claiming that Chizik is doing a good thing by using it? Which is it?

Completely agree. As I read this article, I was thinking about the comments Saban made yesterday on the signing day show in ESPNU. He said that when a player commits to Alabama, they/he expects that to be firm and that they shouldn't look elsewhere, they should keep their word. Hypocritical to put that on a kid but then do the opposite when it suits the school. Consistency is lacking.

Saban pulled Daryl Collins' schollie offer last year, didn't he? And he went to Kentucky too if I remember. Maybe Saban is Kentucky's best recruiter.

From Saban, "We have some people that could not finish the season that will probably not be able to continue to play, that will be replaced, and we have several players that can graduate and may not come back for their fifth year, who have been redshirted. When you add all those things up, plus guys we have that may not qualify, it is not fair to criticize the numbers."

I think that is true for everyone but why is it that Alabama has had 12 players in 4 years who were so severely injured that they might qualify for medical hardships? And if they do qualify, that means they maintain their scholarship so how exactly do they get "replaced"?
