Kent State in a BCS bowl?

  • A lot of teams falling ahead---including two BE teams---of them with a conference championship still to go. Where do they have to finish again?

  • As a grad I'd love to see it happen.

    But it won't.

It's either in the top 14 or 12 for an at large non AQ conference team.

Would have never thought it would even be possible after their first game of the season. I'm sure you remember that wild ass play when the guy ran the punt back the wrong way and the other team tackled him instead of taking the points. I can't remember the other team they were playing, or which way it went, but that was a clusterfvck on both sides.

Is that even with an unranked BE champion?

Unfortunately I think the Big East is still an AQ conference... I believe Connecticut played Oklahoma in a BCS bowl not to long ago from the Big East and they weren't ranked.

Was there a qualifying non-AQ team though that year? I thought it was Top 16 or 20 if BE champ was unranked.

  • The rules for a non AQ to get an automatic qualifying spot is either top 12 or top 16 and ahead of a champion of one of the AQ conferences.

So, in this case, they would have to finish 16th or higher. And you know what, that actually might be possible. But, they would get absolutely smashed in a BCS bowl game.

It's 14 and I'm pretty confident on that.

Well you are wrong. This is from the BCS website.

    Automatic qualification

    3. The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, or the Western Athletic Conference will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:

    A. Such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or,
    B. Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.

No more than one such team from Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference shall earn an automatic berth in any year. (Note: a second team may be eligible for at-large eligibility as noted below.) If two or more teams from those conferences satisfy the provisions for an automatic berth, then the team with the highest finish in the final BCS Standings will receive the automatic berth, and the remaining team or teams will be considered for at-large selection if it meets the criteria.

    Well Damn,

You got me but thanks for the info. I'll admit that I'm wrong when I am and glad to know the rule TBH. I could have sworn it was 14 but now I know. Thanks again.

Well I wasnt sure at first so I looked it up on the website before posting so i cant take too much credit.

And ND is seperate from this rule. They have thier own rule which is a whole different story.

All i know is that BCS is going to be an absolute mess this year. You could have 6 sec teams in the top 10 and i could see a 3 loss team getting an at-large bid for the first time( I believe).

At Large Bids go to the the people that the heads of the actual bowl committees themselves want to pick don't they? I would assume that outside of the BCS conference champions, that the heads of the bowl committees are going to choose the teams that travel the best. I say that, but isn't there a rule where at least one non AQ team, if not two, have to get a shot if they are in that top 16?

I should actually read the whole post you made earlier but I got lazy. I just saw 16 and 20 and knew I was wrong.

Only problem is they will lose to NIU next week, easily the best team in the MAC this year.

If there's one thing that unites OSU and UM, it's their Walmart fanbases.

    Also obesity.

I like to think that, in that scenario, you would choose to be a die-hard Kent State fan, amassing thousands of delusional posts on the Golden Flashes message board about how Kent State football is entering a new era.
