Thinking about trying it. I lift 5 days a week and do cardio 2 to 3. Just want to do some more research before I dive in.

  • I would suggest cutting carbs in half the first week to see how you react before getting to 40g a day.. it takes some getting used to

  • I did it for about a year in 2010-2011. But I cycled it. I'd low carb all week and carb up on weekends. It wasn't hard to diet during the work week because I was busing working and weight training. But the weekends were impossible for me. Low self control I guess. I'd do squats on Monday just so I'd have the energy in the weight room because that was a challenge. It lost about thirty pounds and I still drank like a fish er Friday night. I've been on the paleo diet for a couple weeks now. Basically a gluten free, grain free, dairy free, legume free, preservative free diet. I can eat fruit on it which appealed to me. Berries are the lowest carb fruit and one of the best and I don't get carb crazy. Most of the time... I had dinner at my moms tonight and saw a loaf of bread and about lost it. Haha good luck man!

That's the thing. I don't even know how/where to start.

Google Lyle McDonald Ultimate Diet 2.0. It's a cyclical ketogenic diet which is a little easier to adhere to. Nutrition is what I do and I am very experienced with ketogenic diets, whether it be as an intervention for diabetics or getting mixed martial artists to cut weight.

  • did it for a month...now I'm doing paleo, will switch back to keto when I want to cut again next month

keto is a great diet but it's not as easy as it sounds to stay in a state of "ketosis"...when people say you cut your carb intake down to so and so and increase your fat intake...you have to find your lowest tolerable carb limit per day for your body and keep it under that amount.

You also have to reduce your protein intake slightly to stay within ketosis limits. A side note, you should cycle off this diet in 30 days and not extend beyond that. Take 30 days off and increase your carbs to roughly 50-60g/day then get back on ketosis for 30 days.

There is a link attached for a ketogenic ratio of all the foods you intake during the day. It sounds like a pain in the arse at first but if you set up an excel sheet with the formula plugged in and I also have an app that I put all the foods I eat into and at the end of the day I plug those totals into my excel sheet to make sure I'm within keto limits. For this formula to be most effective the ketogenic ratio should be less than 1.5. What makes that happen is lowering your carbs and reducing your protein slightly while increasing your fats.

Now fats...no transient fats, cut way down on saturated fats and up your mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Cook with olive oil, find great alternatives. Cut out the breads, and pastas and you'll see a huge difference.

Ketosis is a great fat burning diet but you have to keep your body in that state and it's hard to do for extended periods of time but good luck. If you have any questions, hit me up and I'll be glad to give my twocents

Ha ha. He'd be pissed if he knew that was being passed around and he's the kind of guy that scours the net for any sign of his name being brought up. He knows his stuff and explains the biochemistry for the laymen much better than I could.

it was emailed to me by a friend...so I understand if he would be upset but there are millions of people passing around copies of things like his book every day...I think he might see how much promotion it gives his name and his ideology

if any of these people ever want more information...he's the first guy they are going to look up and look to for more information so in some ways its publicity for him

  • I have tried it a while ago. Green sooner has it right with Lyle Mcdonald. You can buy these things called keto sticks that you pee on and it will tell you if you have reached ketosis. If you start the diet I'd recommend those. The diet also gets a little easier to handle but it's never easy.

Never tried it personally or prescribed it, but I am a fan of intermittent fasting which is a major component of Hofmekler's nutrition philosophy.

It's the same thing essentially. I bought the e-book on google for pretty cheap and it's a pretty good read for a reference if nothing else. I need to get back to doing it. The 5-6 meal a day thing is a pain.

Are you still doing intermittent fasting?

  • What's wrong with doing it the old fashioned way? I initially lost 40 lbs of chunky hubby, then put on 20 pounds, then lost 16, currently put on 30, and in the process of losing 22. By my mark, I've lost about 35-45 pounds of fat and put on approx 5-10 pounds of pure muscle in 6 months.

So far, so good... all good muscle adds during the bulking and cutting phases and no crazy diets. Just hard work and eating extremely well.
