According to news outlets (I saw it on BBC) and Twitter. North Korean state run media said it was the result of "fatigue."

He was always my favorite of the Axis of Evil dictators. I'm going to miss the propaganda and stories about him never pooping.
Kim Jong-un, his successor (and son) attended an English-language school in Switzerland, so he's lived in the west and is hopefully not as batshit insane as his father was.
