A guy like Smart, just as Pelini did, isn't going to leave for a stepping stone job. There is no reason to. As good as Arkansas has been for a few years, it is still somewhat of that next tier, whether they like it or not. Smart is going to make over a million a year to be a DC and not have the pressure of worrying about if he is keeping his job from year to year. He is going to wait for the job that is a possible destination to open up and they are going to have to pay in the ballpark of 2-3 million for a first time HC. I hope the Tennessee job opens up just so that we can see if he has been promised something down the road at Bama or not. If he stays after a job like that is offered, with an Alabama at AD and an Alabama that already worked with as DC, then I would think that he is getting the keys to the thrown one day, just maybe not publicly.

Muschamp worked for 2 schools between the time he worked with Saban and got a HC gig. Fisher was the OC at FSU before being hired as the HC. Jason Garrett was promoted from OC of the Cowboys to HC of Cowboys. And I don't know if I would claim Dooley.
