He'd do OK. I don't think he would compete at the top of the SEC with the other elite guys, though. He has gotten complacent at Iowa and that's a huge reason they are struggling this season IMO. Like Stoops, he might benefit from a change in scenery.

Overrated??? What about his coaching ability is overrated? He has zero talent and zero expectations when these recruits get to Iowa, not to mention they haven't had a back since Greene...I'm not saying he's great but calling him overrated seems very misinformed...

Overrated relative to his salary. Even w/ a bad home state talent pool, he can't recruit at all and averages 4-5 losses a year. Never seen a guy so hyped for such mediocrity.

Just chiming in from an Iowa perspective. I have stuck up for Ferentz his career but he needs to adjust to the scene of the game today. He's great at helping guys get to the next level but he doesn't know how to recruit skill players. All his top recruits are linemen, tight ends, and line backers. Ferentz earned his salary by taking Iowa to 2 BCS games, multiple 10 win seasons, NFL track record, the list of accomplishments goes on. However, he is currently not earning his salary. Iowa lost a ton of underclassmen to attrition for whatever reason. He is also way too stubborn to make changes (worst qb in the country played every snap of the season). Plus, he hired Greg Davis. Ferentz is a god at coaching lineman. No question. His defenses are usually very good, but he needs to hire a real offensive mind to be OC if he enjoys his job. Let someone else run your offense, and do what you do best. Iowa will bounce back to their 8ish wins in 2 years but I expect next season to be similar to this.

He would need to hire a good offensive coordinator (not Greg Davis) and UT would have to give him 3-4 years and then they would be contending. He's a guy that's a slow-build, solid foundation guy. I do think he could get the Vols to 7-8 wins and a bowl the first year and he and his staff will be able to evaluate well, something that will be needed early on because it's going to be tough signing top-shelf out-of-state talent right off the bat.

But IMO overall, it would be a solid to good hire.

I think Ferentz would do really well with a new office and some fresh scenery. He seems to have grown complacent and extremely conservative in his current situation. Punting from the 31 yard line is just not something you do. It doesn't matter the distance or wind, you go for it or kick a FG from the 31 yard line. Ferentz makes 1-3 decisions of that type almost every game now. I think he would do really well if he was hungrier, and a new job could bring that. He and his staff have done an unbelievable job of developing OL, TE, DL, LB, and DB, but NFL talent at skill position offensive players has severely lacked at Iowa. Being in a place where he has the structure and support to recruit and develop NFL talent at skill positions could enable him to win 8-10 games every year. Also be prepared to beat some teams that are better than you and lose to some teams that are worse than you every year. For example, Ferentz only 4 losses to Penn State and just 5 to Michigan, but he has 8 losses to Iowa State, 7 to Northwestern, 5 to Indiana, and 5 to Minnesota.
