Kony 2012

  • devidee said...

What happens after Kony is captured / killed?

Are you ok with the many, many children who will be killed in this effort?

We go after the next solution. It would be naive to think that any auction other than no effort won't have collateral damage.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why?

Why will "making Kony famous" matter?

Like I said, there's a very good chance he's already dead.

An informed public is always better, if people know about these things happening then maybe something can be done to deture it or slow it down, they aren't going to ever be fully stopped because the countries that have a say in this world just don't care or have enough of an interest in it, but if this stuff were to start getting media coverage and spreading then maybe something can be done.

What the harm in making him famous and bringing these acts to the light?

So purposely killing children is ok if we call it collateral damage?

It's focusing attention in the wrong area, imo. The problem is the governments of Africa. You stop Kony and then next warlord simply steps up.

It's a really neat youtube video though.

They are abused daily. Sexually and otherwise. They grow up watching their siblings and other family members being killed. Many times in front of them.

It's not about liking the cause or not. It's about ignoring tragedies in our own backyard for others in far away places. People do this because they know they could actually get off their couches and go into the ghetto and help.

As opposed to wearing a bracelet. And pretending.

This kind of thinking is what allowed dictators like Hitler and Stalin stay in power for so long.

I've lived in dumps like Cleveland, Columbus, and other "ghettos" like that, where gangs and things like that are rampant. That is NOTHING compared to what those kids are going through. To even try and compare the two in comical and says a lot on your part than others.

At least 80-90% of kids in the ghetto still survive to the age of 18, I am not positive that even half that number is true for the Kony "kids".

I'm aware of that, but Kony is a big problem too and should be stopped. You can't stop everything all at once.

Again, no one knows if Kony is even alive. He hasn't been in Uganda for over 6 years. I think the awareness is great it's just extremely misguided.

You should realize that donating to this group may lead to many more children being slaughtered as opposed to "saved."

No one knows if he is dead either and his army still does damage in countries around Uganda and in Uganda. I haven't donated a dime to IC and won't because I don't fully trust their motives, but I will support the cause.

  • You people are idiots. If you really want to help, donate a few cents to buy malaria nets and actually help someone. Over 250 million people worldwide have malaria and 90% of deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Don't waste your money on this nonsense and actually help someone instead of giving yourself a boner over how awesome and caring you are by buying a GD bracelet from a bunch of hipsters.

No thanks, I already sponsor two kids through childfund. I'd much rather bring a mass murderer to justice.

How much are you expecting to go directly to charity honestly?

Most people who work full time expect to be paid. It's a non profit organization, do you understand this concept?

    85-90% at least.

I realize people expect to get paid for their work, but I don't think they should be making hundreds of thousands a year.

  • It's a lose/lose situation.

That part of the world isn't worth saving. The rape of children and babies (not women) has increased 400% since 2000. 1 in every 3 women have been raped, and 78% of all women in that part of the country have been raped. Not to mention that there's nothing wrong (in their view) to drag someone out in the middle of the street, bounded by rope, and hacking at him with a machete, or just setting him on fire. The muslims in that country also know a thing or two about road side bombs, so you have your terrorism, among genocide, an off-an-on civil war, and then Kony. This has been going on for decades, it's nothing new to the government...

Stopping Kony doesn't solve anything, because then another guy just steps up and takes over his role. On top of that, what politician is going to sign off on this? You will undoubtedly have to murder the kids you want to save, because these kids are going to spray you with an AK-47 if you don't shoot first. Or they will shoot RPG's at you, either way, you're going to get involved in Gorilla war fare with kids and other people.

We learned our lesson in 93 during the battle of Mogadishu when we tried to capture Mohammed Farrah Aidid, and the battle was the bloodiest involving US troops since the Vietnam war and remained so until the Second Battle of Fallujah in 2004. This is a country where you just leave them alone.

Honestly, yes. I don't want to argue against you, as I believe that we have similar view points on this topic (Donating to these guys). Yet if it's an army of children that have been terrorising people, then imo yes.

  • FWIW, before I came into work CBS evening news was talking about this and mentioned the charity that is running this campaign. Last year they made 13.9 million dollars and 3.3 million went to Africa, the rest was either pocketed or used for "promotional" materials. I could be a little off on the numbers as I was watching it when I went out the door but it's going to be pretty close to that.

The point is that buying into this isn't what you might think. If you buy the 20 dollar box, less than 5 bucks goes into helping these kids, the rest is "unaccounted for". There are other companies out there, trying to do the same thing that give you much better results.

Also what happens if Koney is taken? Any of you look at the rest of the list that the IOC put out? most of those names are from.... Wait for it..... Yup, you guessed it, Uganda. Where there is a power void, someone will fill it. You get rid of Koney, another warlord fills his spot, and he's doing the exact same stuff.

Fair enough but be prepared for the backlash when the evening news is reporting how US troops are killing 13 year olds on a daily basis.
