I'm super jelly right now. Both franchises are taking their massive local contracts and putting together disguting teams while my team keeps re-signing aging "stars" with a diminishing ROI blank. George would be rolling in his grave right now. cry

  • Dodger fan here and I just want to say slow down a bit from the Dodgers side of things. On paper they look good but I need to see how they play first. Last year all the trades kinda doomed them as they picked up almost half a team with 30 games remaining and that killed chemistry. Injuries and a lack of plate discipline hurt as well.

If they can build chemistry over the spring and get healthy then I will get excited. Also if McGwire can teach them to not swing wildly at every pitch that would be great.

The Angels are a great team but got let down by their pitching last year. I would like to see that rotation, but the offense is incredible.

As you point out though, it is awesome that they are actively using the money they are earning to try and improve the teams.

  • How did the Angels and Dodgers do in the playoffs this year?

  • Now we just have to play like it.

After last season with the Angels/USC, and the Lakers so far this season.... I am not going to hold my breath.

Ehh, never hated the Yankees for that. In fact I envied it, especially during the McCourt years.

I place my trust in Stan Kasten. He knows the importance of the farm system and will begin to rebuild the Dodgers one. The massive amount of spending is an attempt at a quick fix of a big problem and to get fans back to the park after McCourt drove them away.

And as I said, this is all on paper. I could point out a myriad of holes in the lineup that could sink this team.

TBH the Angels didn't do that bad last year. They finished with a better record than the Tigers, but were just victims of the division.

As for USC and the Lakers, I think one problem there is coaching. Whereas I think Scioscia and Mattingly are good managers and shouldn't be the downfall of these teams.

  • People forget with the Angels, Soscia is a great manager.

Yea there were/are plenty of reasons to go around for all the teams. I watched the Angels(litteraly cuz I live a block from the stadium) play like ass for all of the first two months of the season and not look really dominant the rest of the way.

Maybe I'm a little skeptical after seeing all my teams 'tank' I guess. Hopefully Josh doesn't start California dreaming with our bomb year around weather or pick up any old habits out here in LA.

    I'm a Giants fan.

They can spend all of this money on bats and arms with anxiety disorders, but that's not what wins in October.

Bullpen depth, starting pitching, speed, and pray your bats get hot at the right time.

Psshh...That's for those small-market teams. When you're bringing in billions in local TV deals, it's go big or go home and the Yankees FO is sitting around with their thumbs up their asses.

You act like the Giants weren't among the highest payrolls. Sure, they were not first or second, but consistently top ten and even top five.

You guys have sexy pitching though. Am jelly about your staff and two rings.

I'm not, but my almost my entire family on both sides either is from there or lives there. I visit all the time. I love that ish hole.

Yeah, never said we have a low payroll.

Just that the market for bullpen and starting pitching is thin this offseason. You will find that teams usually generate the most success in those areas when they develop from within.

I'm saying the inordinate amount of money being spent this offseason won't correlate to as many wins as people would believe. The market is high right now, and not with the right pieces IMO.
