LSU fans or SEC locals...

  • Just coming off an epic Thanksgiving/Birthday with a trip to NOLA. Also caught the 49er v Saints tilt at the Dome.

On the ride to the airport yesterday morning the cabbie was listening to local sports talk whatever... And it was some of the goddamn funniest ish I've ever heard. There wasn't a single caller NOT calling for LM's head or for Brees to be benched immediately. I've never listened to Finebaum or anything similar, but is this type of clueless, deep crazy standard op in the South? I ask because it wasn't just a smattering of callers... Every, single, one was off-the-rails insane. Each one crazier than the last.

This Sunday do not forget to thank me for blessing you with a sense for irony, my son.

  • Yes, most callers to shows like Finebaum are extremely stupid and don't live in reality. You have to remember though that many Southerners listen to this show purely for entertainment purposes and never call in themselves. I listen some but most of the time it's too dumb to handle.

The lunch time show on JOX in Bham is pretty good. Callers are generally more intelligent/informed.

Lulz. It's tough to beat a good case of irony. Thank you, father.

No doubt the entertainment value was high. I was crying laughing. Even the cabbie was laughing out loud.

The highlight was when this one caller - who was literally screaming into the phone - kept referring to Brees as "the choke artist" and "the coward" and the host very patiently kept pressing, "Ok, so who besides Drew would you want as the QB?"

And the dude couldn't answer. Not because he didn't know who Drew's backups were, but because he couldn't name another QB in the league besides Payton Manning and the 49'ers 'tattooed guy'.

Ha, yeah, I guess, but there is actually way less irony there than you'd think.

The breed of Oregon fan that makes you recoil in disgust - an entire generation of fan who know nothing about sucking on the highest level or really even anything about football - every other Oregon fan finds just as distasteful.

That said, many of the latter, the adults if you will, also have this sense of "I'm just happy about anything! Because I remember when the Independence Bowl was a huge accomplishment!" I often wonder if Oregon actually had MORE insane fans, like Bammy or LSU, would that constant alumni pressure (the cash holders specifically) equate to an NC. I mean as long as Oregon remains "really good" I couldn't ever envision a scenario where Chip or Alliotti would be fired. Chip could lose ten straight to the SEC and I doubt he'd feel any heat at all.

Big fan of NO. This was probably my 5th or 6th time. Will happen with even more regularity given that my GF grew up there and in Jackson.

Yeah Bourbon was Bourbon but it was ramped up a notch with the Bayou Classic - which was hilarious.

My bday was on thanksgiving but my gf's 30th was on Saturday. We were with a huge group (including parents) nightly, so no T-bars but upside was at least 2 insane restaurants and maybe 10 different bars daily and I was allowed to reach for my wallet maybe once. Highlight restaurant, over Nola and Delmonico was Sylvain. Hit it if you haven't been. Not expensive, good sauce, and epic feed. Also fed at Mother's twice, once solo.

Saints game was richter scale loud. Great experience. Even better because I'm a 49er fan. Took $500 off the assembled parentage in drunken bets.

It's just a different world when it comes to football down here. It goes too far quite a bit, IMO, but it is also what has driven some of these programs to the heights that they are at. Truth be told, it has also driven some of them too far in some instances and they have gotten in trouble. I think Oregon got a small taste of that lately as well. When you have success it becomes something that people will do stupid things at times to continue. It's not just in the SEC though. Look at Penn St. People that I still think were solid individuals made awful choices to protect something that honestly, was big enough to survive if it hadn't have been convered up for so long. This season has been feel good stuff for PSU fans as far as the record goes, but the B1G is down big time and there are 4 or 5 schools that are going to be getting better and better while they are stuck in the muck for another 4 or 5 years.

Honestly though, you should listen to Finebaum for a week. See what you think. There is moments of greatness on the show (sometimes too few and far between, IMO), but even when it is polluted with idiots, you can always hope that one of them will be named Tammy or Darrell. Tammy will show you a side of things that you will never, never want to actually come across in person.

I LOVE New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the world...an American treasure.

The city's passion and celebration of life, fine food, good wine and music, is a perfect culture for avid sports fans that love their city.

Yeah, that's what I was driving at... Does that kind of heat equate to a higher winning percentage. I believe it does, and yes I'd agree it also comes with a pretty big downside... But for an NC I think I'd make that trade.

I will def try and get a taste of Finebaum.

I think it happens anywhere that has a history of winning. It isn't just the SEC. The reason it seems like it right now is because no matter how bad their programs are, Kentucky fans remember what it was like about 5 or 6 years ago to be ranked in the top 10 for a couple of weeks, Ole Miss fans were having 9 and 10 win seasons and going to at least the Cotton Bowl, Vanderbilt has had a taste of moderate success now, and Auburn and Tennessee are both top programs that just aren't going to settle for losing long.

Same think has happened at Michigan and Nebraska in recent years. It seems to be happening at Texas now. I also think that Kiffin could be done if they do no have a 10 win season next year and I don't think he is 100% out of the weeds this year.

Chip Kelly will never quite feel that heat as he is the one that got it to this level for the most part. I know he was handed the keys to a program ready to explode, but still, he is looked at as the guy that got it done. The next guy won't be given the same liberties that Kelly could afford at the moment. Success just breeds this feeling and it is very contageous.
