LSU vs Bama

LSU is not BAMA's rival. BAMA has two true rivals in tennessee and auburn. BAMA is in LSU's head right now though.

Best rivalry? Come on man. Best rivalry status means the regular season game has to mean something.

Just a couple years ago the "new best rivalry" was Bama and UF.

Things like this come and go. Real rivalries last mopre than a couple of years.

    Exactly.

Not at all. How often do traditional rivalry games mean anything significant to post season aspirations anymore? How often is the Iron Bowl or Bama/Tenn game the gateway to the BCS?

Bama/UF was a great rivalry because it was relevant. One of those two teams were going to be winning the SEC. Same with Bama/LSU. It doesn't have to be seeped in tradition to be a rivalry, it can be better when its temporary. Take the Patriots-Colts rivalry in the middle of the decade, these weren't conference foes or longstanding enemies, just teams that were assured to meet in the playoffs every year.

3 times in the past 10 years, the OSU/m*chigan game was a game where a team went to the MNC game. Of course, all 3 times it was OSU. BUT, a m*chigan victory in those games would have prevented us from going, and in 1 case would have sent m*chigan to the MNC game.

I'm sure the big10 title was on the line in a couple more of those games as well.

Thats beside the point though. My main point was you can't dub something "the best rivalry" when it's basically a johnny-come-lately "rivalry". This game has nowhere near the history a game needs to have in order to be the best rivalry.

Oh yeah? Well 4 times in the past 4 years either Alabama or Auburn has entered the Iron Bowl ranked #1 or #2 in the country. 3 of those 4 years one of the teams won it all. 2 of those 4 years the game featured the eventual Heisman winner. I guess the Iron Bowl >>> OSU-UM but we already knew that.

As for Bama-LSU or Bama-UF, each has been the most important game in the country the last few years due to relevance. Two #1 vs #2 matchups in a row (one being AP) in the SECC for Bama and Florida. Winner won the national title (instead of just losing it to an SEC team like OSU). Two #1 vs #2 matchups in the same SEASON for Bama and LSU as well as a couple other top 10 matchups the past 3 years. Plus the first teams from the same conference to play for the national title...pretty crazy.

All this to say...the obvious constant here...Alabama is the best team in the galaxy and has been involved in 3 seriously intense and important series of games (rivalries) the past few years...and has bested all 3 teams thus far. We're #1. Suck it, America.

I totally disagree with everything you said. At first i agreed with it, then i started really thinking about it....The best rivalry is Bama vs. Bama. And, if the NCAA would let them, i think Bama vs. The Ravens would become the best rivalry in all of football. Too bad the NCAA sucks and won't let it happen. Still, the original point of Bama vs. Bama being the best rivalry stands.

  • Lunatics abound in this one.

Let's see if I can bring some sanity back to this thread........maybe.

Alabama/LSU is in the middle of a 3 or 4 year run in which the game has had significant National importance every time they stepped on the field.

It looks as though this will continue for a little while as well, but things change very quickly. Two teams playing twice about 2 months apart and being a 1 vs 2 showdown both times is pretty monumental when you look at things.

It isn't that long ago that it seemed like LSU and Auburn were in the middle of such a run as well and that dropped off, but could return to that level of importance as well. I think we are a few years away from Alabama/Auburn/LSU playing a round robin "tournament" like series each year to see who goes on to Atlanta. Arkansas could say that they have been in this type of situation the last couple of years, but I think Auburn will have the stones to break through, whereas I never really though Arkansas was much of a threat to beat both team in a given year.

Michigan and Ohio St was this type of game not very long ago as well, and it had the tradition of being one of the 3 or 4 biggest rivalry games of the year as well. That game would only be matched by a consistant Alabam/Auburn, Texas/OU, or USC/Notre Dame type of rivalries with the same meaning. You can also look at the 90's to see a time in which Florida/FSU was that level of game. It's all cyclical in nature.

Personally, I wish they would move the OU/Texas game to the end of the year now that Texas and aTm do not occupy that week on the schedule anymore and until last year, OU/OSU didn't meet they last week of the season. The RRS is very important, but if both teams were in a make it or break it situation like Michigan/tOSU were in 2006, then that game would be even bigger, but they want to keep it as part of the Texas State Fair, which may seem dumb to some, but they like it and it's their game.

Currently, the thing that sets the LSU/Alabama game apart from the rest of the games is that it appears to be the two most talented teams in football, or at least 2 of the most talented teams in football at this present time. That doesn't always mean that they are the best teams, but the talent level on the field when the two match up is at an amazing point right now. Anyone that thinks either team has any advantage over the other or that either team is in the other's head at all is a huge homer, if not a homo.

I take that back a little bit. Alabama and LSU are in each other's head. They think about beating each other every time they hit they weight room, run sprints in the offseason, or line it up during Spring practice.

It's not about being better than Ole Miss, Tennessee, UGA, Mississippi St, Auburn, Florida, or anyone else. It's about being better than the other team (Bama or LSU) every day they take the field. That is what is so special about that game currently.

  • Eh, you could say the same thing about Bama vs UF from 08-10. I have to much respect for LSU (the team, not fans) for them to be a hated rival.

However, when I actually attended Bama, UGA and LSU were the ones I disliked the most - not AU or UT. Then again, when I attended Bama we lost more than we won...

I hear we have great fans, but last time I went to Bryant Denny I was cursed out, threaten, and everything else. But when I went to hang out with Ich during the offseason I wore an LSU shirt and no one said a word to me

Same happens when I wear a Bama shirt in Vegas. No one says a word because no one cares. If someone says something, its usually "You're from Alabama?" Then I have to explain that I'm not, I just went to school there. Then the response is "Why did you go to school in Alabama?" (and for other SEC schools, I would get the same response if it were Louisiana, Mississippi, GA, etc).

Honestly, people on the West coast just have no idea what its like to go to an SEC school/program. I find myself sticking up for the likes of UGA, LSU, and AU alot more around here.

Alcohol happens to some people, especially in big games. I think it can be fun with a little chit talking.

One of the reasons I love LSU fans is that we can have fun, talk trash, and still have a good time. The group of LSU guys and their families show us great hospitality in BR, but it doesn't mean they aren't dishing it out every moment. I just give it right back. It's all in good fun.....or should be.

Some people take a little trash talking so seriously though and that's annoying. It's football.....it's fun....there is no ettiquette in football. It's not golf or tennis.

  • Pump the breaks there OP, we're not rivals.

First off, I'm pretty sure LSU doesnt have any rivals. Second, we have two rivalries that date back over a century. Rivalries dont just pop up because of a few good games, they take decades to form. So no it's a rivalry, sorry. LSU was on the same tier in the SEC as Ole Miss before Saban arrived and gave life to your program.

That being said, is it currently a really heated divisional game? Absolutely. Has it had NC implications? Yup.

Who? Us and LSU? We' ve played them since 1900 IIRC, but that doesnt make it a rivalry. We've played many teams for over a hundred years, doesnt mean we're rivals.

Like I said, LSU hasnt historically been a good team. They've had a few good seasons/good players, but before Saban arrived they were a lower tier SEC team, and it was never heated. Going by your premise we're rivals with UK, Ole Miss, Miss State, etc.

Take for instance our rivalry with UT, it started with in 1901 with an on the field brawl between the two fanbases. it grew with Gen Neyland/The Bear, and turned into an ugly rivalry with the whole Fulmer thing. Tons of History.

The LSU game became heated when Saban came to UA, which was in 2007.

People in this thread are generally have a really hard time understanding you can have a short-term rival in addition to your traditional, hundred year old rivalries.

No, just have different qualifications for what a "rival" is. Imo, no such thing short termed rivalries, just heated divisional games.

  • Anyone that doesn't think that Alabama and LSU are rivals is just trying to belittle the opposing side and/or is ignorant.

LSU is not Auburn or Tennessee, but it is definitely a rival of Bama's.

LSU's main traditional rival is Ole Miss and vice versa. As Miss St began to become competitive with Ole Miss, that game became a bigger in-state rival and when Arkansas was added to the SEC the conference tried to manufactor a rivalry there.

For those in school in Tuscaloosa right now who became fans as Nick Saban got off the plane in Tuscaloosa, you have no clue what you are talking about. This game was intense and heated well before then I can guarantee you.
