LSU wins the SEC championship

  • but loses the national title.

    To an SEC team.

    Yeah, wtf is right.

The entirety of the argument behind it being unfair for Bama and LSU to meet again in the BCSCG lies in the fact LSU will have played one more game. A game that is the de facto play-in to the national title game. Not only do they have to play it, but if they lose, they won't go the the BCSCG. For Bama to be able to not even win its own conference and still go would be a tragic logical fallacy. On top of that, if LSU did win the SECCG, they would sit at 13-0. Bama would be 11-1. That one extra game is certainly unfair to LSU. Why should Bama be rewarded for losing at home to LSU? That makes no sense. The glove does not fit, mirite?

So, if a rematch was going to occur, and it was known before the SECCG... the only fair way to do it would be to bypass the SECCG and just award the SECC to LSU. That is the ONLY way it would be fair to have a rematch of November 5th. I would not be against this. Any other way is degrades nature of CFB in general. Each week is do or die. That's the beauty of this thing and part of the reason we all love the game.

Oklahoma did exactly this in 2003. They got smoked by 4 TDs in the Big 12 title game and still got to go on and play LSU in the NC.

  • Again, people are missing the point.

Did OU have to play a team they played in the regular season again in the championship? Did that team have one less game to play since they didn't play in the conference championship? I would help you guys out with the answer, but I know that you all are smart fellas.

That's not a precedent that has been set. That will never happen again. We screwed the pooch on that one. We should have never been allowed in that game either.

  • Just to play advocate, isn't the entire point of the BCSCG to pit the #1 and #2 team against one-another? Who's to say that LSU and Alabama aren't still the #1 and #2 teams in the country?

playing less games than your opponent in national title games is nothing unheard of. it's happened a lot.

Personally, I believe they are. However, the LSU having to play the SECCG and THEN play Alabama is highly unfair to them. If the SECCG weren't in the equation, I think it'd be a perfectly viable scenario. Why should LSU be penalized by having to put the wear and tear of one more game on their guys just because they went into Tuscaloosa and beat Bama? That's freaking ridiculous.

If LSU can just be awarded the SECC, then it is fair to play Bama again in the national title game.

If it is the case that there really will be a rematch in the BCSCG I support your suggestion.

  • With two teams, from the same conference? No, no it hasn't.

This is the last time I'm making this point. It is unfairly advantageous for Bama to sit at home while LSU has to play one more game. Why should LSU be penalized for winning and staying #1? If the SECC is just awarded to LSU, then it would be fair.

  • You know, the interesting thing about this argument is that we'd only ever have it when talking about CFB. Due to the way the BCS and bowl system works it seems odd to have a rematch but in any other sport rematches for titles happen all the time. I think this really shows just how different CFB is from all other sports.

LSU isn't being penalized. They are going to win the SEC if they just win games. Bama has no shot at SECCG unless LSU loses. The obvious fact remains: if at the end of the year there are a bunch of 1 loss teams and undefeated Boise.....Bama will most likely go to the NC. And to most unbiased fans, Bama is the 2nd best team in the country and deserves the NC shot

True...showing again the need for a playoff of some sort. Even then, however, you would not have a rematch of football teams from the same division in the same league. You wouldn't include as many teams as say BB or Basketball.

A much more sensible solution would be a playoff system involving conference champions. As many have been saying for years. You could still have the bowl games for all other teams and the Big Bowls can host the playoff teams. $$$ a plenty would still go around IMO. Until something like this, you will always have something to debate/argue/complain about. Somebody is going to get left out every time.

  • Bama won't be going to the NC game. I am one of the people that believe if you don't win your conference, why should you play in the NC game? Hell, Bama won't even win its division. Stanford will more than likely face LSU, and if Geno Smith threw for over 450 yards on LSU I can't wait to see what Andrew Luck does.

I think it would be a fantastic championship game.
