Lakers fans, why all the hate for D'Antoni?

  • I am no NBA fan or anything but I try and keep up with it. I also realize that it's upsetting that you didn't get Phil Jackson to take the job, especially since it sounded like he would have taken the thing, but is it really that bad a pick?

I don't think that anyone is going to deny that he's an offensive genius and doesn't care about defense. My question is that people keep on saying that he should hire a "defensive coordinator" to teach the guys that side of the ball, BUT can't Kobe be that guy? Can't D'Antoni just tell Kobe to be the defensive coach in practice and on the floor?

If you believe Kobe, Phil Jackson only had three defensive sets in his repetoire while coaching the Lakers. You would think that with defensive geniuses (on the floor) like Kobe, Dwight and Metta WP that those guys could single handedly do whatever the hell they wanted to on defense and be just fine.

Is the negative publicity coming because you are honestly worried that the Lakers defense will all of a sudden become like the Suns and Knicks (who had no defensive players on the team outside of Marion and Chandler during his tenure) or are you just pissed that Jim Buss didn't give Phil what he wanted?

My guess is that Jackson was asking for the moon as far as authority along with about 10 million a year by the way.

  • D'Antoni was my second choice. I have no problem with it. I understand why Phil wasn't hired.

I don't know what Phil was asking for honestly. I've heard Jim Buss just didn't want to give him all the authority that he was asking for but I don't really know. I've just heard SO many people bashing the guy because they think the Lakers defense will all of a sudden suck balls.

I just don't see why vets and great defensive players like the three I listed earlier can't take care of that part of the game on their own. Especially when Kobe says they honestly did that anyway even under Phil.

  • The GM of the Lakers or Owner, can't remember which one.. Didn't hire Phil over some really petty crap.. I would be pissed too.. He didn't want Phil to have full control of the moves they would make and the guy was butthurt from Phil's last tenure... The whole thing sounded Childish... The Owner/GM wanted the team to run and did not want the Triangle offense.. idiot

D'antoni is not the right fit and his playoff records and recent stint with the Knicks should prove that to people... I don't like the hire at all...Just my opinion but MD's style of play works in the regular season... But the playoffs? Not so much.

  • This may get a little long.

    1. Phil was almost the unanimous coaching pick among Laker fans, but not the three that make the decisions; Dr. Jerry Buss, his son Jim who runs day-to-day basketball operations, and GM Mitch Kupchak. All three wanted D'Antoni, not Phil.

    2. According to Kupchak, Phil didn't even have the time to ask for the demands that came out in the media. The three decision makers tested the waters just to say to us fans that they made the effort to contact Phil, but he was not going to get it over D'Antoni. Supposedly the door isn't closed if D'Antoni fails to meet expectations (whatever those expectations are).

    3. D'Antoni was hired because he accepted the pay rate Mike Brown had immediately ($4 million per year for three years). There was talk that the Lakers could bring in Nate MacMillan as an assistant, having two members of the Olympic coaching staff at a rate (along with Brown's remaining contract) that would hypothetically be lower than Phil's expected salary.

D'Antoni was my second choice, Phil was my first. I still think this team is built with the Triangle in mind. The potential problem is that Howard isn't accustomed to playing in the low-post with his back to the basket. That style isn't conducive to Nash's playmaking either, but he has been one of the best shooting PG's that I can remember and certainly the best the Lakers had under Phil (despite Nash's age).

Reasonable expectations this year for me are Conference semi-finals. I am not expecting more than that unless we can make improvements on the bench and begin to consistently hold teams to under 45% from the floor.
