What is the best brand outside of Apple? I am looking to spend under $700 it is for my wife. What are the most important things to look for as far as specs?

I have a Dell XPS. I love it. It's the second one I've had.
Sony also makes an excellent laptop.
Stay away from HP.

I love my hp. I've had it for 4 years. You can goto their website and have a custom laptop made. And Toshiba makes a great laptop.

ASUS makes great, cheap laptops. If you aren't doing anything like video processing, it has more than enough power to serve all her web-browsing, word-processing needs.

They always get great reviews for durability. Most of the box brand ones nowadays are built to last 2-3 years and be disposed of.

I have a Toshiba. I have Dell @ work.
To be honest, most people are going to tablets these days, so the laptop is becoming the pager of it's time (obsolete). Prices will continue to drop for laptops.....
