Last B1G CWS Team?

  • When was the last B1G team to make the CWS? Somebody told me Michigan in 1984 and thought that was impossible. I know the Commish says the southern schools have a big advantage over them bc they are in warm weather states but 1984 is ridiculous if true. They need to move their schools to warm weather locations like Kent St and Stony Brook. It can't really be 28 years.

Right, because Kent State and Stony Brook are staples in the CWS.

I wouldn't call them staples after one year. Two maybe but that's tough since Stony Brook had 7 players drafted. I'm guessing they drop off some but not sure about Kent St.

When was the last time a southern school won a wrestling title or made the Frozen Four?

I know you don't have either programs but it's the same concept.

We don't have ice down here and I've only seen it a few times outside of a few ski trips. How do you explain Kentuckys baseball turn around recruiting mid west kids? Also wrestlings fake.

If it snowed in the south I am sure the SEC would own hockey too.

It's never really been a priority. Ohio State has great facilities but no real success. Most of the great HS players go pro. Talent pool up here in BB is not deep enough, football is king in Ohio.

Ohio State hosted a super regional in 2002 but lost to SW Missouri St. That's all I got but yes the B1G is not a BB conference. I'm surprised Nebraska didn't come in and run away with it this year.

Thanks for your answer OSU was my guess about 5 years ago. I remember that stud pitcher, Wimmers?

Ya Wimmers was good but he wasn't on that team. It was SW Missouri not S.Illinios. I'm not 100% sure but I think Nick Swisher was on that team.

I just read that Wimmers is out for the rest of the year, he was starting to make progress too.

  • Michigan made it a few years ago. We won it all in 1984. OP has a point though, B1G baseball should be better.

Nebraska of 2005 doesn't count IMO. Still in the Big 12 which, correct me if I'm wrong, put out some good teams.

    Just trying to help. lol

Yeah, Nebraska has had some pretty decent teams, especially in the early 2000's. We had a lackadasical coach who was fired at the end of last year. They brought in Darin Erstad, an alum of Nebraska, to right the ship and he had a decent season this year. He's been blazing on the recruiting trail and I imagine they'll be making noise within five years IMO.

BB??? Don't know about Ohio, but Indiana has put out some serious talent recently. Jarrod Parker, 1st RD pick out of HS, faced off against a Brownsburg team a few years back that had Lance Lynn and Drew Storen not to mention a few kids that went to OSU. Growing up in LA baseball was huge year round for the most part. Indiana baseball is an after thought, sad..

The big names went pro, they don't play college ball. Kevin Youkilis(sp) Chad Billingsly type. Ohio has produced some of the biggest name is baseball history. Pete Rose, Thurman Munsun, Michael Jack Schmidt, Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr to name a few.

The point I was making is that there is not enough talent after the MLB draft. Although Kent St has proved that wrong. I know that there is some really good talent in the Cincy area.

  • Eh, what can you do unless you have pro indoor facilities, it's hard to get a realistic practice or scrimmage in. With the new MLB draft rules you may see more midwest kids staying the college route and the B1G returning to a respectable level. Need some academies that run year round in the mid west though, similar to what Core 6 does for football.

^^agree with this. B1G country does put out some studs, but they all go pro straight from HS - Jeter, Lowe, and McCluth come to mind from MI. The depth is certainly lacking though and that's how a lot of the SEC and Cali schools prosper - the guys that got picked in the late rounds/not at all but still wanna play the game. In the Midwest its a culture of you make it or you quit.
