Grits

I guess there is none. Either pick grits or oatmeal.

Edit: I honestly don't consider Midwesterners yankees TBH. I lived in Indiana for 8 years and there isn't a ton of difference.

I'm not a Yank but I'd have said oatmeal until very recently. Never thought grits had much flavor when i was growing up. But when my lady made some proper grits I was floored; i have since been converted. Being a true southern gal, i guess she knows how to make them right.

Oatmeal for the un-fat

pure flavor: grits win, as a savory dish i think they have more possibilities

from a health perspective though Leppycole, Oatmeal is better for you. As a sweet dish i think it's flavor is limited. Best homemade oatmeal i have prepared is with fresh blueberries, little bit of cinnamon.

I don't know how the grits were served in the mess hall. I personally slow cook them for thirty minutes or so at about 4 times liquid per one part grits (stone ground). When they are close (about 5 minutes) I stir in about a cup of grated sharp cheddar and two tablespoons of butter along with a LOT of pepper and a bit of salt.
