Literature: What are some of your favorite pieces of literature

  • I can honestly say I've read War and Peace all 1300 pages front to back.

  • I'm going to begin reading Joyce's Ulysses this Bloomsday. I've wanted to read it for a while now, but have not had the proper amount of time to dedicate to the work.

    Tough read, I've never gotten more than 70 pages in, I guess if you've read some of Joyce's other stuff it makes it easier. I think its just getting lost in the stream of consciousness writing, I was never exactly sure what was going on. Good luck.

  • I've read Dubliners. Oh, and exactly one paragraph of Finnegan's Wake. Reading that one paragraph was an accomplishment in my mind.

    A divorced father is living in Bimini in the 40's.He spends his time painting, fishing, and drinking. He struggles with his demons about living in an amazing place and missing his family. It then goes into him taking part in the war (WW2) and hunting German U Boats for the USA near Cuba. Life, death, fishing, drinking, Bimini, WW2, guns,,,,,,good stuff.

    Hemingway is known as one of the founding fathers of big game fishing. He caught more giant Tuna and billfish then anyone during his time. But there is a part int he story where he and his sons go fishing and hook a Swordfish in the daytime while trolling. The story of obviously fiction, but this would be the first Swordfish ever caught this way to my knowledge, He should have known better.

    Thanks for posting. I'll let you know what I think of it.... I knew he was a big time fisherman, been to his house down in the keys... Didn't realize he was THAT big time though.

    I;d say him and Zane Grey were the two most influential people in turning big game fishing mainstream. They did have a bigger platform to broadcast from than a lot of other people, though.

    I read The Old Man and the Sea every summer.

    I need to read more Hemingway, and more Faulkner too now that I think of it.

    Don't do it. I've read it twice and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. You spend so much time trying to figure out what's going on that you don't get much out of the story. There's one chapter that doesn't even have punctuation.

    I'm determined to read it. At the very least to say that I have.
