MLB: Miguel Cabrera now leads all 3 Triple Crown categories

  • Sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled football board, but Tigers' slugger Miguel Cabrera just hit his 42nd home run, tying him with Josh Hamilton for the AL lead. With just two weeks left in the regular season, Cabrera now leads in all three Triple Crown categories. This is by far the latest in the season a hitter has lead all three categories since Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown for the 1967 Red Sox.

It also helps that Hamilton is out for a couple days (?) so Cabrera can hopefully get a lead in the HR category. Is he close to 2nd in BA or RBI?

  • Great to see and watch. Cabrera is an absolute stud and always has been. Imagine what his numbers will look like when he's done, providing he stays healthy. Still a rather young man in the middle of his prime. Puljos has made him seem not as great but he's pushing for all time great status if he can stay healthy and keep hitting. The triple crown would be an advantage he holds over Puljos.

  • Cabrera was up by 7 points in BA and 7 RBIs going into today. He's 2/2 with 1 RBI through 5 innings today.

I'll be patiently waiting for the excuse people to come out and bring this up if he gets it. It's like they don't understand that injuries are part of the game and always factor into things like this.

Oh I'm not saying that as an excuse, I'm just saying that it's the truth. I love Cabrera and my Tigers.

The only thing that could keep Cabrera from breaking some records HR-wise is playing his home games at Comerica.

I hope he gets it. Cabrera is a beast. I go to Tigers games just to watch him hit.

Wasn't meaning to imply that you were making excuses. Just saying there will be a faction of people that will. The Hamilton crowd for sure will.

  • Can he not get the MVP if he wins the triple crown?

I think he should get it regardless but I'm not expecting it. Trout has a legion of support out there amongst the media. Can't really be upset regardless but when was the last triple crown again? That should be all that matters in this one. Puljos heating up in the last couple of months should be enough to take some of Trout's votes away but you never know with the media.

Yeah, Keith Law and the Sabermetrics crew are adamant against Cabrera, calling the race "not even close."

Dumb in my opinion since Trout's Angels are fading down the stretch and Cabrera is driving the Tigers into the playoffs.

Isn't that the definition of MVP? Most VALUABLE Player? What's so valuable about Trout if he can't get his team to the playoffs?

  • As of the 6th inning tonight, Miggy leads all three categories outright. He's almost sure to win RBIs and BA. He's up 44-43 in HRs over Josh Hamilton going into tonight's Rangers vs. A's game.

  • Miggy is a BEAST. He has earned MVP Triple Crown or not.

  • IMO, Trout has earned the MVP and it's not even close. Sorry, Miggy is slightly better than Trout at the plate and Trout is lightyears ahead in the field and on the bases. It's not even close if the voters factor in every facet of the game, as they should.

Agree. Trout plays some of the best OF around too. 320 avg 30 HRs, 127 runs 80 RBIs from the leadoff spot. He has a higher ON base % than Miggy too while Miggy doesn't contribute anything outside the batters box. Not at 3B or 1B.

Big difference in value though. Trout is going to be watching Cabrera in the playoffs from his couch. You also have to remember that Trout plays a position where the defensive war opportunity is much higher.

I don't care what anyone says, Cabrera is the MVP. He has carried the Tigers to the playoffs.

And an absurd steal rate for someone with so many attempts. Over 90%. Crazy numbers all around.

The Angels have a better record than the Tigers in a much tougher division! You can't use the playoffs argument when Trout's team is better than Miggy's team!

Doesn't change the fact that the Tigers are going to the playoffs while the Angels aren't.

Carried them to the playoffs in the worst division in baseball. As of tonight LAA has a better record and they don't get a combined 38 games vs the Twins and Indians and play in a division with two teams with better records than the Tigers.

  • I think the thing that puts Cabrera over Trout for me is that pitchers have more data and video to inform them of how they should pitch to him than they do for Trout. That makes Cabrera's job more difficult than Trout's, IMHO. If I had a vote, I give it to Cabrera by the smallest nose over Trout.

  • Angels before Trout - 6-14
    Angels after Trout - 82-57

    This playoffs argument is weak.

    It doesn't, but that's a strawman argument.
