  • I figured we could keep this going since things are staring to heat up.

Thoughts on the Blue Jays Trade?

Looks like Tori Hunter is going to land in Detroit.

  • Jays fan here. I'll go full homer and say this makes us a legit contender in the AL as long as the staff pitches to it's potential (big IF).

  • Seems the Mariners have legit interest in Josh Hamilton. That is strange, they dont seem like the type of team to wrap up so much in one player.

Especially a guy like Hamilton. Great player, but his contract is going to be way too risky.

Character, and injury risk. Just not worth the money he will command.

Agreed, unless they are going to spend Big to add more talent to that team I just dont get it. They traded Ichiro because they wanted to younger. Hamilton doesnt seem to fit what they are trying to do if they are going with a youth movement.

A great pickup for the Tigers. Huge upgrade in the outfield and a capable bat at the 2 spot. Now they just need to solidify the bullpen.

They might just be doing that. Rumor is they are looking at Dan Haren or Ryan Dempster and looking to replace Valverde with Jokiam Soria or Ryan Madson

  • Really like the pickup for the Tigers. He won't keep his batting average up because his BABIP was .389 (which led the league) and is bound to regress. However I think he should provide good speed and obp in the 2 spot setting up for Miggy and Prince. His defense is also still pretty good.

Also love the trade for the Jays. Yea there are ifs, but if those guys play as they are capable of it makes the Jays a really good contender in the AL East and IMO a fun team to watch.

Now the two teams I support:
Interesting about the Braves. Not sure what their plan is but they need a backup catcher as McCann is becoming too injury prone.

I am curious what the Dodgers do this offseason. I know they are seriously interested in signing Youkilis, which slots Hanley at SS. I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign Youk and then try and flip a pitching prospect and Dee Gordon (only speed...his obp and defense are not good right now) for a more reliable pitcher. Harang and Capuano are expected to be put on the trading block if they sign the Korean guy and they believe that either Lilly or Billingsley will be healthy enough to take the other spot.

Where the hell are they going to get the money to pay for all of this?

If you are talking about the Dodgers...

    Don't you know? ENDLESS PAYROLL!

But seriously? I have absolutely no clue. It wouldn't surprise me to see them eclipse $200 million (I think they are around 190 right now). The first priority to me though is re-signing Kershaw.

Aren't the Tigers owned by the Ilitch family? They have plenty of money.

I'm talking about Los Doyers. You guys just dropped 23 million on Brandon League.

At this rate the Albuquerque Isotopes are going to have a higher payroll than the Pad Squad.

Yea I really don't know. I think they initially spent this money as it was the quickest way to upgrade the team. Now they are putting money back into upgrading the farm system and international scouting so hopefully in the future we won't need to spend as much money. I do like the commitment to upgrading the team though. Will see if it all works or not.

  • Let me ask you guys something about the Nats. Should they hold tight with Morse, Werth, Harper, and play Laroche at First or go get a First Baseman. It is rumored that they are in on BJ Upton, Bourn, or Victorino and I wouldnt break the bank on any of those guys. I love Victorino if the price is right but Upton and Bourn are going to get more than the market is worth IMO. Id try to make a trade and get Billy Butler from the Royals and keep my OF intact

Well, The Guggenheim group paid over $2 billion for a franchise that I didn't think was worth $1 billion so shrug.

I guess we're Yankees west. Not the way I would like to build a team, but I would much rather have ownership take risks and shell out cash than what happened under McCourt. Colletti has always been a pretty big spender.

What type of ballpark does the Nats play in?

I would probably stay far away from Upton, although he's from the VA area. Maybe at a hometown discount for Upton. Victorino is not the same player (or even close) as he was in Philly. Get him on the cheap if you have to.

The reason they went for the $2 billion is because of the upcoming tv network deal. It will probably create their own channel ala Yankees or Lakers and is rumored to provide $250+ million a year if they work out the deal properly. That is why they spent that much on the team and aren't afraid to pay people like crazy.

I would sign Victorino to a short deal ( 2 years or even 1 if his agent want to reestablish value ala Adrian Beltre) and wait for the Goodwin kid. He probably needs another year in AA and a quick stop in AAA.
