MLB adds wild card team

  • I don't like it personally. Those runs down the stretch between Atl and StL and Boston and Tampa wouldn't have existed under this new format. I'm not a fan of the change

    what do you guys think?

  • I hate the change, BUT the worst part:
"For the 2012 postseason only, the five-game Division Series will begin with two home games for lower seeds, followed by up to three home games for higher seeds."

  • I absolutely hate this.

  • This is dumb. It lessens the stress down the stretch fighting for that final playoff spot.

Edit: I'd rather they make the DH for both leagues or none, but that is a different discussion for a different thread.

  • All the people who say it's dumb playing in terrible divisions.

Saying that those races wouldn't happen is factually wrong. Instead of race for 4th seed it's 5th seed no difference at all.

As a Jays fan it's about damn time. 4 playoffs spots is hella gay, most teams don't have a meaningful game past July right now.

Does the MLB office know about air travel?

  • one advantage is that winning ur division now means something. i think that this new "series" should be a 3 game series. 1 game is just dumb. anyone can win 1 game. 1 games doesnt prove anything

  • i don't like it. in the AL you can essentially mark it down who's going to make the playoffs every year. NY, Det, LA, Tex, Bos, and Tampa are the only teams competing for playoff spots in the forseeable future and they will all get in, except one. If they would have left it as is, the wild card race between one of the AL west teams listed above and two of the AL east teams listed would have been epic.

red sox fan here. the al east is the main reason for this expansion.

  • I am in favor of expanding the playoffs. I have always thought 8 teams out of 30 were too few, but 10 seems strange.

But 3 games gives the teams that win the division too much time off and they'll get rusty IMO. Baseball's all about repetition.

1 game basically makes it like College Hockey playoffs where anything can happen. See Michigan beating NoDak last year, where if we faced them in a say 5/7 game series we would not win it.

It is now a major disadvantage to the two teams playing in this one game playoff.

if you get rusty in 3-4 days then lose ur first series, you dont deserve to win it.

Ever notice that the first couple games after the all star break are a lower level than most other games...?

  • I like it. Teams will play hard down the streatch to win the divisions and it keeps more cities involved. Teams like Toronto and KC have been doing great with their farm systems and could be knocking on the door. Washington, hell Pittsburg had a wining record at the break right? It will help keep more teams involved which is great.

anything to keep the interest for some of the other teams , never a huge fan of change overall but in this case it might help a little

Would this really keep them interested though? You still have to win a lot of games over the year to get the spot, like last year it would have been Braves/Cardinals and Red Sox/Rays. I just think it makes it so more teams at the top make it, but it doesn't really help the teams in the middle ground that are more than a couple games back (Toronto was 9 games back of the Red Sox and KC was 19 games back of Boston). If anything it maybe gives the Giants and Angels, again looking at last year, a slight fighting chance for that last spot at the end of the year, but overall I don't see it changing much.

Yep. Hopefully interest is gained in smaller markets and ticket sales and TV deals allow them to spend money and keep guys. Would love Longoria to spend his career in Tampa, McCuthen in Pitts, Hanley and Stanton in Miami. Im a Red Sox fan and would love parity.

Since you are a Blue Jays fan I will use them as an example. Say the Jays win 95 games but finishes second in the division.

The White Sox win the Central with 88 wins.

So the Jays have to play an extra game to get in the playoff. Do you think that is a good idea.

Anything that makes more teams have meaningful games later in the calendar.

Having more wins doesn't get you anything. 3rd place in AL East often has more wins then NL wild card doesn't get them anything.

It's how the thing works so I'm happy.

You realize baseball isn't really setting itself apart from anything? Their attendance numbers are dreadful, adding one extra spot will fill stands and keep people interested. It's a win win.
