MSU/Big 10 Fans: Thoughts on Kirk Cousins?

  • He has been mocked to the Eagles in the second round and they are bringing him in for a workout. What do you guys think of him? Pros/cons? Ceiling? TIA

He's not mobile and tends to hold the ball too long while trying to extend plays with his legs. If that sounds awkward, that's only because it is. He tends to force plays under pressure, though that's pretty much true for any pocket passer.

If he gets even decent pass pro, he's pretty dangerous. Great accuracy on the intermediate and short routes, strong enough to drive the ball on 15-20 yard out routes near the sideline. Cousins can toss the ball deep as well, though MSU didn't do a ton of that this past year.

He's about as seasoned as you could ask for; 3 years starting, better than 64% career completion %, threw 25 TDs and 10 INTs in a non-spread O last year (over 3300 yards). He's a great leader and a 4.0 student, which counts for a little something.

His ceiling is probably Matt Hasselbeck.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Could be a smokescreen as well. We brought in Brockers and he doesn't fit our defense.

I think they draft a QB fairly high. Kafka doesnt do much for me. This could be Vick's last year if he gets hurt. I think they cut him next year, I think they can out of the contract pretty cheap

Reid REALLY like Kafka and is the #2 guy next year.

  • He may like Kafka, but I don't think they seem him as a long term starter. I just hope they don't trade up and draft Tannehill. I want them to draft Cox

  • Best thing about Cousins is all of his intangibles. He is an amazing man, very mature, intelligent, and a great leader.

This is a fair assessment. I think he can reach his ceiling. If I where you guy’s I think would rather have Brock Osweiler from ASU though. A lot more upside IMO.

Pros ---- - Intangibles off the chart. Kid is a born leader, extremely positive locker room presence - Has a good, not great arm. Can make the NFL throws. - Very intelligent, understands the game very well - Efficient in a pro-style offense, not some gimmicky spread attack

Cons ---- - Very limited mobility - Throwing on the run is not a strong suit - Can get flustered under pressure and make poor decisions and hold on to the ball too long - Sometimes throws off back foot leading to poor passes and/or interceptions

Ideally needs 2-3 years to learn behind an NFL QB to develop. I think he's an NFL level backup who needs to be groomed under a good QB to become starter material.

    Very good eval.

  • I'm not saying that Cousins isn't good, but every time I hear someone say how great he is, I think of him in the MSU vs. Bama game. Just tough for me to imagine him being anything close to elite. Great kid though....

He’s not elite but he has some developmental talent, to be a solid NFL QB down the road. The Bama game wasn’t his brightest moment but MSU was out talented at every position and had no chance in that game.

When people talk about how great he is they are probably referring to his character and not his game.

His celling is probably Matt Hasselbeck and his floor is probably Journeyman type career. Can’t think of a Journeyman right now to compare him to.

That game wasn't really Cousins fault. Our Oline was completely and utterly outclassed. He never had the time to be a good quarterback.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. I think he will make a solid backup in the NFL and could possibly shine a bit as a starter if he gets a chance but has areas he needs to improve in order to do so.

Yeah, it's hard to judge a QB's abilities when he's getting rocked by blindside hits on almost every play. The only lesson you should have taken away from that game is this: Bama is on a whole 'nother level compared to MSU.

He's also met with the Chiefs' coaches. I think that 1-on-1 time with the coaches will only improve his draft stock. There's no ego on this guy and he's very coachable.

Not fair to judge him on that. Our O-line stayed in East Lansing that day and Cousins was getting absolutely killed on every play. It's a miracle he survived the first half, that alone should show you the fight he has in him Would have been easy to just stay down and call it quits after being crushed on the blindside for the 15th time in the first quarter. Peyton Manning would have struggled in that game.

  • I really like Cousins. But don't think he is anything but a backup. Nothing wrong with that...he probably has a long and lucrative career on the bench, like Stanton.

Nothing wrong with that assessment. He's a guy with all the intangibles and does everything pretty well... but he just lacks the natural athletic ability to be a sure-fire starter. There are worse things in the world than getting paid big bucks to hold a clipboard and wear a cap.

Ya, I wouldn't say I'm judging him on that... its just always what I think of when folks talk about him.

Actually, just my opinion, but I think of him as a Greg McElroy type of QB. Cousin's probably has a slightly stronger arm while Greg is slightly more accurate.

He's more comparable to Hoyer, but I see what you're getting at.
